“Every photograph is a certificate of presence” - Roland Barthes.

We are proud to announce that Lumina Collective's exhibition project ECHOES is an official part of the Biennale della Fotografia Femminile in Mantova Italy opening 4-27 March at Casa del Mantegna.

Through perceptions of presence and absence, Echoes explores ways in which photographic image-making in Australia is linked to questions of identity and place and to generational stories of translocation.

In Photography and Place (2011), writer and Australian curator Judy Annear suggests, “…in this photography of place and residue, [there is] an implicit acknowledgement of the role of the photographer as a mediator and a storyteller, and the story is not at all straightforward. It is not picture-postcard perfect.”

By embracing long-form deeply embedded personal practices, Echoes investigates ideas of identity and place through explorations of family history, trauma and loss, migration and notions of home.

Echoes was Lumina's first major exhibition project, exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ballarat in 2018 - 2019. Since then the long form work within the project has grown with the work at the Biennale an evolution of the original exhibition.

We will post installation shots and more about each artist's projects in the coming weeks. For more info about the Biennale and the other artists exhibiting www.bffmantova.com/en/
