NEW BLOG POST

Were you at the first Sydney Quilt Show? What are you recollections? We’d love to hear your stories, so please leave a comment.

The Sydney Quilt Show has been held in various venues since the first one, where quilts by members of The Quilters’ Guild of NSW (now known as QuiltNSW) were displayed at Lower Town Hall, Sydney Town Hall. The Show was on 16-19 June 1983. It was an inspiring exhibition, with 143 quilts, garments a...

The New Quilt is returning to Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, Windsor, NSW from 25 June to 19 September 2027. Entries open on Monday 1 February 2027 and close on 19 March 2027. Start planning your entry! Don't miss this opportunity to win: The New Quilt Prize $1500 and the New Quilt Runner Up $500.

QuiltNSW recognises the quilt medium as an art form and is committed to providing opportunities for textile artists to share their artwork in a gallery setting. The New Quilt is a juried survey exhibition showcasing art quilts that is open to anyone residing in Australia and New Zealand. (Entry fees are discounted for QuiltNSW members.) For the purpose of this exhibition, a quilt means stitched and layered materials using any technique and the quilt must be an original, non-traditional design.

Sunday Stash No. 309

Some fabric collections never really leave your heart.

For me, Jennifer Sampou’s Shimmer range is one of them. I’ve loved her fabrics since they first appeared, and I’m always on the lookout for pieces I don’t already own. So when I spotted these additions—the honeycomb prints, the soft metallic shimmer and those delicious coordinates—they absolutely had to come home with me.

And before anyone says it… yes, I know those last three fabrics are looking suspiciously Christmas-y. As someone with a long-standing general disdain for holiday quilts, I feel obligated to point out that this was entirely unintentional. 😂 That said… add a little sparkle to lime green, rich red and chocolate brown, and I might just be persuaded to make an exception.

One of my favourite things about quilt shows is hunting for those unexpected treasures. Sometimes it’s a fabric you’ve been searching for for years. Sometimes it’s an old favourite that pops up when you least expect it. And sometimes it’s a completely new print that starts an entirely new quilt.

That’s exactly why I love the Marketplace at the QuiltNSW Exhibition. Alongside all the beautiful quilts, you’ll find fantastic retailers from across Australia, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably discover a fabric (or three!) that simply refuses to stay behind.

Now… who wants to place bets on which of these makes it into a quilt first?
