It is well known that the traditional food of the Mid-Autumn Festival is mooncakes. Mooncakes are round, which symbolizes reunion and represents people's good wishes for family reunion.

It is said that eating mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival began in the Yuan Dynasty. At that time, Zhu Yuanzhang led the Han people to resist the Yuan Dynasty, and there was an uprising on August 15th. The message was inserted in the mooncakes by giving each other mooncakes. The custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival spread among the people.

Teochew mooncakes are also called thousand-layer mooncakes due to their appearance. The pastry is made by laminating a water-based and oil-based dough into one another. Taiwanese mooncake - Dan Huang Su is also similar like Teochew's one, and "Dan Huang" means egg yolk. We choose salted duck egg yolk because the duck egg's flavour is more stronger and the taste is more softer and oilier. It combine with sweet paste, such as red bean paste, chestnut, lotus and so on, it tastes sweet and salty, so it can bring more layers of texture and flavour to mooncakes. We like the mooncake skin is crispy but not dry, the filling is sweet but not greasy, each filled with salted duck egg yolk and topped off with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. yum~🤤🤤🤤
