Continuum Art Society is one of the founding groups behind Hazelhurst Arts Centre, part of the community of artists who first brought the idea of an arts centre to Sutherland Shire Council over 30 years ago.

Established in 1982, Continuum brings together artists from diverse backgrounds across painting, sculpture and mixed media. Members range from emerging artists to award-winning practitioners with works held in collections nationally and internationally.

SHOWCASE 26 celebrates this community of makers, their individual inspirations, their local surroundings, and their shared commitment to art and connection.

Built in the late 1940s when post-war shortages made conventional building nearly impossible, the cottage is full of surprises. Think a an extravagant tiled bathtub, a sunken lounge and a home made almost entirely from ingenuity and whatever materials could be found.

Have you or someone in your family been part of movements for peace, resistance or justice?

Artist and researcher Alex Martinis Roe (VCA, University of Melbourne) is inviting Sutherland Shire locals to take part in Daughters of the Resistance, a research project exploring how histories of resistance, peace activism and women's liberation are carried forward through storytelling, kinship and memory.

Alex is especially keen to hear from the daughters, by birth or by close relationship, of women involved in resistance movements, anti-colonial struggles or peace and liberation activism.

Participation is a relaxed, recorded conversation (about an hour), and you'll have full opportunity to review your contribution before it's shared.

Spring school holiday enrolments are open 🌸🎨

Keep the kids creating these school holidays with a hands-on art workshop at Hazelhurst. From painting and printmaking to clay and mixed media, each session is led by experienced art educators who encourage creativity, confidence and plenty of imagination.

Designed for children in Kindergarten to Year 6, workshops run from 28 September to 8 October. Prices from $45.

It's your last chance to see "Milli Jannides: The tip of the tongue" at Hazelhurst.

Layered, quietly unsettling and impossible to rush, these oil paintings reward a slow look.

A pile of keys sat on Milli Jannides's studio floor for months. When she finally pressed their shapes into the canvas using crayon and frottage, something clicked.

Keys appear across several works in "The tip of the tongue", pressed into paint, rendered in wax, dreamed about. Drawn from novelist Mario Levrero's reflection that the keys we lose are often the keys to ourselves, they become a quietly compelling thread running through the exhibition.

It is the kind of detail that rewards a slow look.

Exhibition continues until Sunday 30 August, open daily from 10am to 4pm, free entry.

Grounded: Holly Eva, Anthea Stead, Tanya Stubbles, Alison Wi******er
Until 1 September

Grounded brings together four artists connected by a love of the earth and sustainable making.

Tanya Stubbles transforms reclaimed timber into sculptural forms with history and soul. Anthea Stead paints coastlines and green forests, capturing the quiet strength of nature. Alison Wi******er works with raw wool, felting directly from the sheep’s back to honour slow craft. Holly Eva re-imagines discarded materials, proving everything can become art with vision and care.

United by purpose, these artists value authenticity over excess. They remind us there are enough materials on the planet, what we need is awareness, creativity, and connection.

Milli Jannides returns often to writers: Virginia Woolf, Anaïs Nin, Mario Levrero, Anne Truitt. Their words find their way into titles, into the logic of a composition, into the reasons a painting is finally finished.

"Words can't cross" began as a large blue painting that sat complete for months. It was only finished after another work failed entirely: a sliver of that failed canvas placed quietly on top of the blue. Then it was done.

"Milli Jannides: The tip of the tongue" continues until Sunday 30 August, open daily from 10am to 4pm, free entry.
