We’re kicking off Sydney Fringe by celebrating two years of songs and stories in Sydney. DOUBLE TAKE is our 20th show, and invites back three artists who have appeared at the series to share how they approach old songs with fresh ears. DOUBLE TAKE will feature DOBBY, Malaika Mfalme, & Saxon Penn.

DOBBY - DOBBY
ARIA Award-winning artist DOBBY is a true force of nature, with his electrifying live performances leaving audiences spellbound. A rapper, drummer, composer, and producer, he brings an unmatched energy to the stage. Proudly identifying as Filipino and Murrawarri, DOBBY’s roots run deep in the Aboriginal lands of Brewarrina and Weilmoringle in New South Wales.

MALAIKA MFALME - Malaika Mfalme —Angel King—🇹🇿🏳️‍⚧️
London-born and raised across continents, Malaika Mfalme is a Tanzanian/Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and cultural producer creating on Gadigal Land (Sydney). In Swahili, their name translates to “Angel King.” Blending folk, soul, East African choral traditions, and immersive live looping, Malaika creates music rooted in Black love, grief, tenderness, and collective healing.

SAXON PENN - Saxon Penn
Saxon Penn writes songs where beauty and heartbreak share the same room. Drawing from the raw storytelling traditions of folk and country music. His sound blends fingerpicked guitar, banjo, and harmonica, moving between centuries-old ballads, talkin’ blues, and stark original songs that feel cut from the same cloth.

🚧PASS PAUSE PLAY #19: WE NEED SPACE🚧

The life of a touring songwriter is built through so many more spaces than you think. Wine bars, council halls, and 20 seat book shops, are essential for artists to hone their craft and connect with local audiences. In light of the closure of incubator venues like Moshpit and Lazy Thinking, this month’s edition will feature artists reflecting on the loss of these spaces. PASS PAUSE PLAY #19 will feature: Santino Salvatore and Mihka Chee.

🪕PASS PAUSE PLAY #18: MY FAVOURITE THINGS 🪕
When looking for new songs, it’s amazing what can be found in an old guitar, a new toy, or a shmancy plugin. This month’s show will explore how artists carve out sonic worlds with the instruments in their lives. PASS PAUSE PLAY #18 will feature: Jumbles, Bonniesongs, and Magnus & co.

JUMBLES
Jumbles is a trio made up of guitarist and vocalist Ben McDermott, drummer Daryl Crowley and bassist William Laz. Hailing from the Central Coast, London and Wollongong, the band is based in Sydney, Australia. With inspiration drawn from 2000s emo, alternative rock and neo-soul, the band has developed a sonic signature equal parts devastating and beautiful.

BONNIESONGS
Bonniesongs makes music that is both mellow and hazy and driven and edgy, traversing art-folk, psychedelia, dream-pop and grunge. She could be compared to art-rock and alternative artists such as PJ Harvey, Feist and Grouper.

MANGUS & CO. (TAS)
Hailing from lutruwita/Tasmania, Mangus & Co. draw on boisterous fingerstyle guitar and fierce growling vocals, influenced by classic Americana, pre-war blues, & trad-jazz. With three studio albums and two live releases, their 2024 vinyl album ‘I Don’t Think I’m Here’ debuted at No. 18 on the Australian Independent Records chart.
