Some stories are watched. Some stories stay with you. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽฌ

At the NIFFA Opening Night Sydney Gala 2026, Charisma Kalyandi, (member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Liverpool) shared her perspective on the power of storytelling, and why cinema continues to hold such a special place in our lives.

Because often times, a film does more than tell a story. It makes us feel, remember, question and connect.

A beautiful perspective from an evening filled with stories, conversations and the people who make cinema what it is.

We run on one belief strongly, that Indian cinemas deserve a wider stage. And today, we've ran few miles closer to seeing our dream come true.

NIFFAโ€™s stories are now getting a bigger international platform.

Through ABC Australia and ABC Asia, this partnership will help extend the reach of NIFFAโ€™s films, filmmakers and stories to audiences across ๐—”๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ.

NIFFAโ€™s success didnโ€™t happen overnight.

It was built one film, one city, one audience and one bold decision at a time โ€” driven by a vision of our founder to bring Indian cinema, stories and culture closer to communities across Australia.

Today, that journey has found its way into the Parliament of Western Australia, with a Hansard Statement recognising Anupam Sharma, Festival Director & Founder of NIFFA, and the impact of the festival he built.

Because behind every milestone is a story of persistence, purpose and a whole lot of belief.

From a vision to a movement. From cinema screens to the parliamentary record. ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

When cinema becomes a conversation, it reaches beyond the screen. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

A proud moment for NIFFA as Hon. Dr Parwinder Kaur MLC recognised the festival and its contribution to celebrating Indian cinema and community in the Western Australian Parliament.

From screening rooms to the floor of Parliament, Indian stories continue to find their voice, their audience and their place.

Indian cinema becoming part of the conversation in WA Parliament is the day NIFFA breathed for exactly.

A nation is not just lines on a map, it is a living archive of stories we carry within us. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

It exists in the cadence of our languages.
In the frames of our cinema.
In the fragments of memory we inherit and recreate.
In the communities we build far from the land we call home.

This 80th Independence Day, NIFFA honours not just India as a country, but India as a cinematic consciousness, one that travels with us across borders, across screens, across generations.

We celebrate the India that is remembered, reimagined, and retold, wherever its people may be.

Happy Independence Day.
