At the NIFFA Opening Night Sydney Gala 2026, Charisma Kalyandi, (member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Liverpool) shared her perspective on the power of storytelling, and why cinema continues to hold such a special place in our lives.

We run on one belief strongly, that Indian cinemas deserve a wider stage. And today, we've ran few miles closer to seeing our dream come true.

Weโ€™re excited to announce a new ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐—ถ-๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ก๐—œ๐—™๐—™๐—” ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—”๐—•๐—– ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น, ahead of the 2027 festival and future editions. But for us, this is more than just a media partnership.

This partnership means exploring new content opportunities, bringing Indian Australian stories to wider audiences, and potentially creating an ๐—”๐—•๐—–-๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ as part of future NIFFA editions.

It was built one film, one city, one audience and one bold decision at a time โ€” driven by a vision of our founder to bring Indian cinema, stories and culture closer to communities across Australia.

Today, that journey has found its way into the Parliament of Western Australia, with a Hansard Statement recognising Anupam Sharma, Festival Director & Founder of NIFFA, and the impact of the festival he built.

Because behind every milestone is a story of persistence, purpose and a whole lot of belief.

It exists in the cadence of our languages.
In the frames of our cinema.
In the fragments of memory we inherit and recreate.
In the communities we build far from the land we call home.

This 80th Independence Day, NIFFA honours not just India as a country, but India as a cinematic consciousness, one that travels with us across borders, across screens, across generations.

We celebrate the India that is remembered, reimagined, and retold, wherever its people may be.
