--Improv Involves Trying New Things--

If you do Improv, you can take part in many different types of acting exercises, including things that you haven’t tried before! For example:

• Join a couple of other people and take turns to come up with sentences starting with successive letters of the alphabet.

• Create poetry-like dialogue on the spot, rhyming the last words of sentences.

• Act like an animal, either a talking one or a normal one, in a scene with other people. You might be a chicken, shark, T-rex…

• Become part of an imaginary machine producing an imaginary product such as an aeroplane or a disdain for capitalism. Slow down, speed up, speed up some more…

• Play the role of an expert, answering questions from reporters on a nonsensical topic.

• Act like a character who has a special characteristic or affliction and see if another participant can guess what it is.

• Start acting out a scene but change genres when prompted e.g. sci-fi to Western to romance to film noir.

• Pretend you’re in a musical and burst into song when prompted, even if you have no training or experience. (The chances are that nobody else has, either!)

• Take part in a rap battle, freestyling.

--The Benefits of Joining an Improv Group--

If you’re never done improv before, why not give it a go? There are a number of benefits to joining a group:

• Exercise your imagination. Facts and logic can be dull, whereas at an Improv group, you can let your imagination loose, visualising all sorts of different settings, characters and activities. Who knows what you’ll come up with on the spot!

• Reduce stress. You can temporarily forget about work, study, finances etc and focus on making up fictitious scenes, or watch others do so. It’s fun and good for a laugh. Afterwards, you’ll be happier and more relaxed.

• Develop acting skills. If you’re thinking about doing some acting in the future then improv is a good way to practise and develop your skills. Nobody will judge you, so you can experiment with different techniques.

• Meet new people. Improv attracts both women and men of different ages and backgrounds. You might meet an occasional traveller from interstate or overseas. Some participants have English as their native language and others speak it as a second language. They all have one thing in common: they like to have fun!
