There was a time when our favourite lollies came in a box. Remember when you'd go to the pictures and buy a box of Fantales, Minties or Jaffas?
Fantales are still around today of course, now manufactured by Allens and are sold in cellophane or plastic bags. They were originally made by Sweetacres (who also made Jaffas back then) and were individually wrapped with each wrapper featuring the mini-biography of various movie stars.
Who remembers the distinctive blue box with the yellow fan? For a time they also promoted stars on the back of the box like this one from 1960 featuring J O'K, which comes from the National Film and Sound Archives.

Who can remember getting a ‘dink’ on a friend’s bike? I’m sure that’s we used to call it when you sat on the bar of your friend's bike and got a ride. With the girls, who had no bar on their bike, there was dinking too. One girl pedalled standing up and the other sat on the seat.

Another in the series of favourite Australian TV programs. I’m sure you’ll remember Mother and Son, the sitcom produced by the ABC from 1984 until 1994. The show starred Ruth Cracknell, Garry McDonald, Henri Szeps and Judy Morris, plus many Australian actors of the time in guest roles.

Some memories from my childhood - The 1950s/’60s when socks were darned, baths shared and kids roamed free. Who can remember Mum sitting down listening to the wireless at night and darning all the school socks? We’d have tea about 6 o’clock, followed by the kids doing the dishes, then settle down with homework and the serials on the wireless; “When a Girl Marries”, “Dossier on Dumetrius” and Randy Stone covering the “Nightbeat”. The kitchen would be warm from the stove still radiating the heat of the fire created to cook the family meal – meat and three veg, and then dessert of bread and butter pudding.

We had one of these in the backyard. It was a good way to get rid of a lot of rubbish. like papers etc. All the neighbours had them and yes one neighbour would light it in the morning when the washing was drying on the line. I can still hear Mum saying "Can't he see we have washing on the line?”

A typical after-school scene back in the late 60s. School kids hanging around outside the “Tuck Shop” eating lollies or chewing on Sunnyboys hoping for that magical yellow writing inside the wrap meaning you have a free one. Note the EK Holden up the road.
