The Beatitudes, as heard during the Russian Orthodox Matins of Holy and Great Friday (the service of the Twelve Gospels), brings a moment of quiet radiance.

Drawn from the words of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew, they are not simply moral teachings, but a revelation of the inner life required to follow Christ.

In this service, the Beatitudes take on a heightened, almost paradoxical meaning. As the Church prepares to hear of betrayal, trial, suffering, and crucifixion of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, these words proclaim blessedness not in power, but in humility; not in triumph, but in sacrifice.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit…” — those emptied of pride, who can receive God.
“Blessed are those who mourn…” — those whose hearts are broken open to compassion.
“Blessed are the meek…” — those who do not grasp at power, even when injustice unfolds.

By the time we hear, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,” the Beatitudes are being fulfilled in real time, unfolding through the Twelve Gospels.

The Beatitudes are sung with a solemn tenderness - neither triumphant nor despairing. A mirror of Christ’s own path to Golgotha, and a calling for each Orthodox Christian to follow Him - in humility, endurance, mercy, and love.

The Magnification to the Mother of God (Величит душа моя Господа) is a central hymn sung during Matins, as part of the All-Night Vigil in the Russian Orthodox Church.

The text comes directly from the Gospel of Luke (1:46–55), where the Mother of God (Theotokos) speaks the words known as the Magnificat: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” In the Russian Orthodox tradition, this canticle is not simply recited but sung in a structured form, with each verse followed by a refrain honouring the Mother of God.

It appears toward the middle of Matins, after the reading of the Gospel and before the final hymns of the service. Historically, the Magnificat has been part of Christian worship since the earliest centuries, and in the Slavic tradition it became one of the most recognisable parts of the Vigil because of its distinctive choral style and the repeated refrains between the verses.

The Litany of the Departed is a solemn series of petitions offered by the deacon (or priest) on behalf of the departed souls.

Each petition asks God to grant them rest, forgiveness, and eternal remembrance.

The choir responds with the words:

“Lord, have mercy”
