When the country music legend passed away on March 20, 2020, at age 81, his former wife had no bitterness to share—only memories of the man she had loved for so many years.

Marianne, an actress known for *Hee Haw*, married Kenny in 1977. Although their marriage eventually ended, she remembered the kindness, humor, and sweetness that had defined so much of their time together.

“For 17 of 21 years, every day, he was so sweet,” she recalled.

At 18, a lawnmower accident left her facing a difficult recovery. But instead of giving up on music, she picked up a guitar and taught herself to play, one chord at a time.

Then, in 1963, a chance talent contest near Columbus, Ohio, changed everything. Connie entered almost by chance, sang a Jean Shepard song, and walked away with five silver dollars.

Country singer Bill Anderson happened to be performing that night. Impressed by what he heard, he later encouraged her to come to Nashville.
