🎭 The Great Bengal Opera – A Tale of Resistance and Art 🎭

Set in the heart of colonial India, The Great Bengal Opera unfolds the turbulent story of a theatre group struggling to keep the flame of art alive amidst oppression and prejudice.

At the center stands Lambert, a stern British officer determined to impose the Dramatic Performances Control Act of 1876, tightening the chains of censorship on Indian voices. Opposing him in spirit but equally restrictive in mindset is Bachaspati, a conservative Brahmin who disapproves of women stepping onto the stage, unable to accept their quest for dignity and survival through theatre. Completing the trio of obstacles is a seemingly ordinary local shopkeeper, whose refusal to extend credit to the troupe adds yet another blow to their already fragile existence.

Between the red eye of colonial power, the rigid walls of caste and morality, and the crushing weight of economic struggle, The Great Bengal Opera captures the resilience of artists who dared to dream — and to perform — against all odds.

In Tiner Tolowar (The Tin Sword), Utpal Dutt brings to life the passionate yet precarious world of the Great Bengal Opera, a theatre company struggling to survive in 1876 Bengal. Its actors — Jadu, Jalad, Haraballabh, Gobor, Natabor, Peyara, and Bibek — represent a generation of artists caught between art, hunger, and colonial oppression.

The British Raj had tightened its grip on Bengal’s cultural and political life. Theatre was closely watched, censored, and often dismissed as subversive. Yet these actors, with little money or recognition, carried their fragile props, tattered costumes, and immense dreams from one small town to another. Their stage was often a courtyard or a bamboo platform, their audience — the common people hungry for hope and laughter.

Through myth, music, and satire, they spoke of resistance and dignity, sometimes disguising rebellion in ancient tales to evade the colonial gaze. Each performance became an act of quiet defiance, an assertion of Bengali identity against the weight of empire.

Utpal Dutt shows that even in poverty and persecution, these artists never surrendered. Their “tin sword” — a symbol of fragile courage — shone brighter than any weapon of power. It is through their laughter, pain, and persistence that the spirit of a nation in chains continued to breathe on stage.

BirkKrishna Daw — The Patron and the Predator

BirkKrishna Daw, proprietor of The Great Bengal Opera, embodied the contradictions of Bengal’s theatre world. A patron of art and ambition, he helped the stage survive in an era when both colonial rulers and native elites scorned its artists. Yet behind his cultural generosity lurked greed and desire.

When the talented Moyna — later known as Shankari — joined the troupe, Daw’s admiration turned into obsession. He offered Beni, the theatre’s director, a cruel bargain: if Moyna became his mistress, Daw would build a grand theatre hall and make Beni its sole proprietor.

Utpal Dutt’s Tiner Taloar captures Daw in striking colours — not merely as a villain, but as a symbol of a corrupt system where art was exalted even as artists were exploited. The role, powerfully acted by Sandip Bhattacharjee, brings to life the moral decay and complexity of a man torn between patronage and possession.

In Utpal Dutt’s Tiner Tolowar, Priyanath Mullick stands as the symbol of a restless generation, the New Bengal Youth Movement. A learned man with a fierce sense of justice, he writes against British oppression and exposes how his own people are being crushed under the weight of colonial rule.

Drawn to The Great Bengal Opera, Priyanath finds in theatre a living weapon, a stage where words can become sparks of rebellion. He believes art can awaken the masses, that through performance and poetry his voice can reach the hearts of those who have forgotten to dream of freedom.

Within this world of passion and protest, he meets Moyna, and in her eyes discovers both love and the fragile hope of a better life. He dreams of saving her, of building a world where love and liberty walk hand in hand.

But fate is cruel. Stripped of his dreams, Priyanath ends up working in a stable of horses. Yet even there, amid the dust and silence, he does not forget his duty to the motherland. The fire within him refuses to die. His heart still beats for the freedom of his people, for the awakening of Bengal.

Priyanath Mullick — the writer, the rebel, the lover — remains a flame that no darkness can extinguish.

টিনের তলোয়ার নাটকের 'বেণীমাধব' এর চরিত্র চিত্রণের সময় নাকি গিরিশ ঘোষের জীবনের নানা উপাদান এসে মিশেছিল উৎপল বাবুর লেখায়। তিনি যে সচেতন ভাবে কতটা গিরিশ বাবুর অনুষঙ্গ আনতে চেয়েছিলেন, তা আমাদের জানা নেই। যেটা অনুমান করতে পারি, তা হল - বাংলা থিয়েটার এর গোড়াপত্তনের সময় থেকে অনেকদিন পর্যন্তই বেশিরভাগ নাট্যপরিচালক তথা দলের মালিক কে এমনিই একটা আদর্শগত সংঘাতের মধ্য দিয়ে পথ চলতে হয়েছে। টাকা জোগাড় করতে গিয়ে সমঝোতা, দল কে টিকিয়ে রাখা, মহত্তর শিল্পসৃষ্টির জন্যে নানা অপ্রীতিকর সিদ্ধান্ত, তার ওপরে পারিপার্শিক সমাজ ও পরিস্থিতির সাথে মোকাবিলা করে মঞ্চের পাদপ্রদীপের আলোয় একটা ভাবনাকে, একটা প্রযোজনাকে এনে ফেলা - এটা সেকালে যতটা কঠিন ছিল, আজও অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই তাই। আসুন। প্রতক্ষ করুন বেণীমাধবের জীবন। অভিনয় করবেন রাহুল গাঙ্গুলি।

আমরা ভুলে গেছি, কিন্তু সময় মনে রেখেছে।
ইতিহাসের বিশালতার ভেতরে তলিয়ে গেছে অগণিত মুখ—যাদের ত্যাগ, শ্রম, আত্মবলিদান ও ভালোবাসার ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে বাংলা থিয়েটারের মজবুত ভিত। তাদের আত্মবলিদানের আলোতে আলোকিত হয়েছে যে মঞ্চ, সেই মঞ্চে তাদের নামটুকু ও লিখে রাখেনি কেউ।

উৎপল দত্তের অমর সৃষ্টি 'ময়না' ওরফে 'শংকরী' — সেইসব মানুষদেরই প্রতিনিধি।
একজন সাধারণ সবজি বিক্রেতা, যিনি একদিন দলের প্রধান অভিনেত্রী হয়ে ওঠেন। যিনি প্রেমে পড়েন প্রিয়নাথের, কিন্তু দলের স্বার্থে নিজের প্রেম, নিজের সুখ, স্বপ্ন সব নিজ হাতে গলা টিপে হত্যা করেন।

অনেক কান্না, অপমান, লাঞ্ছনা পেরিয়ে ময়না শুধু টিকে থাকেন না—
তিনি প্রতিবাদ করেন। প্রশ্ন তোলেন। দাবি করেন। বেণিমাধবের চোখে চোখ রেখে বলেন—
“কাপ্তেনবাবু কে তাই করতেই হাবে তিতুমির”

যে আগুনে তিনি নিজেকে পুড়িয়েছেন, সেই আগুনের স্ফুলিঙ্গই একদিন জ্বলে উঠেছে দিন বদলের বিপ্লবের মশাল হয়ে।

অমৃতা পাল চৌধুরী প্রস্তুত করছেন নিজেকে, ‘ময়না’ চরিত্রে অভিনয় করবার জন্যে। আপনারা প্রস্তুত তো? দেখা হবে আগামী ৮ই নভেম্বর।

মথুর বলেছিল—নরম গলায়, কিন্তু গায়ে কাঁটা দিয়েছিল তার প্রতিটা কথায়।
"আমি কলকাতার তলায় থাকি..."

একজন ম্যানহোল পরিষ্কার করা মানুষ, যার কণ্ঠে ছিল নরম অথচ সবচেয়ে কঠিন প্রশ্ন। এক বিখ্যাত নাট্য পরিচালকের মুখোমুখি হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিল—
" কই যুবরাজ ছেড়ে আমাকে লিয়ে লাটক ফাঁদতে পারবে?"
এই সরল কিন্তু অগ্নিদগ্ধ প্রশ্নই নাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিল সাহিত্য আর নাট্যচর্চার মাটিকে। মথুর এর মুখ দিয়ে উচ্চারিত হয়েছিল সেই চাপা, অবহেলিত কণ্ঠ, যাদের কথা ওঠেই না মঞ্চে, আলোয় আসে না যাদের জীবন। অথচ বিপ্লবের বীজ বোনে সমাজের নিচুতলার মানুষেরাই, তাদের ধুলো-ময়লা মাখা, ঘামে ভেজা মুষ্ঠিবদ্ধ হাতেই ঘোষিত হয় প্ৰসমাজ বদলের প্রতিবাদ। সেই সত্যকে ভাষা দিয়েছিল মথুর।
আজ আবার আমরা সেই কণ্ঠে ফিরে যাচ্ছি। "টিনের তলোয়ার"—উত্পল দত্তের লেখা এক বিদ্রোহের দলিল। শ্রেণী সংঘাত ও প্রান্তিক মানুষদের হয়ে কথা বলার প্রয়োজন তো আজকেও, এই সময়ে দাঁড়িয়েও রয়েছে, তাই না?

অতীত জীবনটা আজ আর বোধহয় ভালো করে মনেও পড়ে না। সেই কোন কালে ভাগ্য তাকে ঠেলে দিয়েছিল পতিতাবৃত্তির পথে। সেখান থেকে মাথা তুলে দাঁড়িয়েছেন থিয়েটারের আঙ্গিনায় এসে। আজ শিল্প তার অস্তিত্বের ভাষা। থিয়েটার শুধু তাকে আশ্রয় দেয়নি, দিয়েছে আত্মসম্মান, নিজেকে ভালোবাসার অধিকার। পুরনো জীবনের দাগ মুছে যায় না বরং সেই স্মৃতি আজ তার তার অনুভবে দোলা লাগায়। তিনি জানেন কিভাবে একটা দল বদলে যায় - কিভাবে বদলে যায় মানুষ। তাই বেণীমাধবের ভুলের বিরুদ্ধেও মুখ খুলেছেন তিনি কিন্তু দল ছাড়েননি। বসুন্ধরা শুধু একজন অভিনেত্রী নন তিনি এক বিপ্লবের নীরব সাক্ষী। মনের ভেতর সযত্নে লালিত কিছু রঙিন স্বপ্ন নিয়ে তিনি বেঁচে থাকেন। বসুন্ধরার জটিল ও বহুস্তরীয় চরিত্রটি মঞ্চে জীবন্ত করে তুলবেন বর্ষীয়ান অভিনেত্রী স্বপ্না মজুমদার।
