Maracatu is on the streets.

Maracatu has always been music for the people — played in the streets, shared with the community, and felt in the heart.

There was a time when women in Maracatu could only dance and were not allowed to play the drums.
Today we celebrate the women who play, lead, and keep the rhythm alive.

✨ Join us for a Portuguese street party during the month we celebrate women — a beautiful moment of culture, music, and community coming together.

We are honoured to bring the rhythm of Maracatu Ubuntu to this vibrant cultural celebration.

Maracatu Ubuntu began with a simple intention: to bring people together through rhythm. Inspired by the Afro-Brazilian tradition of Maracatu, we started small — and yes, there was a time when we didn’t even have proper drums. We played on buckets, improvised, learned by listening to each other, and built this community beat by beat.

What began with plastic buckets has grown into a vibrant ensemble and a beautiful, welcoming community. Today, Maracatu Ubuntu is more than a percussion group. It is a safe space where people can arrive exactly as they are — no experience needed, no perfection required. Just rhythm, connection, and belonging.

We are proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re celebrating this journey on the 29th at our end-of-module party. Come drum, sing, dance, and celebrate with us. This is community in motion.

Maracatu Ubuntu gathers every Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Aboriginal Dance Theatre in Redfern. This is an open invitation to anyone who feels curious about rhythm, music, and community.

Ubuntu means “I am because we are.” It reminds us that we grow through connection. Each week we continue unfolding this project together — learning rhythms, singing, moving, and building something larger than ourselves.

You don’t need experience. You don’t need your own drum. Just bring yourself. We are always excited to welcome new faces into the circle.

We’re so excited to invite you to our third gathering of its kind, a collaboration between Soul Drummers and Maracatu Ubuntu Sydney 🥁✨

This afternoon brings our student groups together to meet, jam, and celebrate all the cultural richness we’ve been seeding over the past term.

✨ What to expect

An afternoon of rhythm, dance, and connection, community vibes all the way.

2:00pm – Doors open (chai, snacks + welcome)
3:00pm – Student performances (Soul Drummers + Maracatu Ubuntu)
5:00pm – Live dance set with Luis Piazzetta & the Soul Drummer crew
(drum kit, djembe, dun dun + more — come move with us!)
Closing – Didgeridoo meditation to ground and finish
6:00pm – Event ends

👶 Kids under 6 – Free
🧒 Youth (6–18) – $10

A special partnership between Soul Drummer and Maracatu Ubuntu Sydney 🎉

We’re coming together to celebrate the end of both terms with a beautiful community party!! with dance, food, showcase, jamming, rhythms, and sharing the vibes we’ve been co-creating in our regular classes around Sydney.

Come Drum with Us — Feel the Beat of Maracatu!

For the past five years we have been immersed in the heartbeat of Maracatu, a powerful drumming tradition from northeast Brazil rooted in African culture, community and celebration. Now we are opening the circle and inviting you to join us.

Over six weeks we will play, sing, laugh and move together, learning the rhythms, songs and stories that bring Maracatu to life. No experience needed, just open ears, open hands and an open heart.
