To mark the Celtic feast of Samhain and the 180th anniversary of the Great Irish Famine, join us for the launch of Seang (Hungering) — a searing poetry collection reclaiming the stories of rebel daughters of famine refugees sent to Australia.

I’m gathering memories, superstitions, and moments of joy, related to Halloween or Samhain. Yours might inspire a new artwork revealed this October.

Samhain Stories is an art project that’s inspired by people’s stories and traditions related to Samhain or Halloween, especially those with Irish-Australian connections. I’d love you to be part of it.

Art isn't made in a vacuum

My drawing, "Who is King of The Birds?" (Cé bhuil Rí na nÉan?) is a finalist in this year's Remagine ArtPrize, a prize dedicated to environmental awareness.

Many of you have mentored, encouraged and challenged me, giving this work a life of it's own. Your company on my artistic journey is the real prize. Thank you all.

It's only paper

Whenever I start a new sketchbook, I draw something fast and loose on the inside cover.

There is only one rule: don't worry about the quality, just do it. Get something onto the paper - doesn't matter what it is, whether it is legible or if the composition is off.

The point is to start the book. I know that by filling it, there will be misfires, blind alleys and the occasional surprise or discovery. I also know that if I don't take that first step, then nothing happens.

I love my sketchbooks. They are many things to me: a reflective space, an expression of self, an exploration, a series of micro-adventures, a familiar workbench. So, it's easy to become precious in my approach to using them for their intended purpose: learning by doing.

Have a lovely day and remember, as one of my mentors told me, "It's only paper."

Oops..some unfinished business...

I found a box of unfinished art inspired by some of your brilliant responses to a prompt: "Reading Is..."

The project fizzled out and the drawings got buried but now they're back from the limbo of the shelf at the back of the studio.
