Back to the classics. Restocking some of my larger pieces and enjoying a slower pace in the studio. Feels so good to slow down a little and simply enjoy the making process again.

Big glaze disaster.

Once again, black clay decided to do its own thing. Although this time, I can’t completely blame the clay.

Watching the videos back, I can clearly see how patchy and poorly glazed some of these pieces were. I think there’s also something about this particular combination of glaze, clay and form that just doesn’t work very well with my glazing technique… and the result speaks for itself.

But I’m not giving up on these six pieces just yet.

The rescue plan: at least 3 more coats of glaze and another firing.

I refuse to call them a loss. Let’s see if we can bring them back to life.

I’ll show you the result soon.

Pretty consistent results with black clay and white glaze this time. Just one loss with a crack on the rim, but I’m more than happy to keep it at home.

It’s actually the first black piece I’ve kept for myself, and I love it.

A little glazing process + the reveal

For these pieces I tried Walker Ceramics Feeneys clay with Mayco Colors glazes, and I absolutely loved the result.

The clay gave the finish a more matte, raw and textured feel, which works so beautifully with the glazes.

The first brushstroke is always the most nerve-racking. After that, you just go with the flow.

The fate of that glaze is already written anyway — even if you mess it up along the way.

That’s part of the magic of ceramics. You never really know until the kiln opens.
