This is what community looks like.

A few years ago, a room full of people in Sydney came together over food, conversation, and a shared belief that these stories deserve to be heard. Together they raised over $10,000 - every dollar going directly toward bringing And What Will People Say? to Sydney Fringe Festival 2025

We were honoured to welcome the previous Federal MP , whose commitment to the communities we serve made the evening feel even more meaningful.

That night reminded us why we do this work. And it’s why we’re doing it again - this time in Melbourne.

A 15-year-old girl wrote an anonymous op-ed in The Guardian this week.

She documented - in precise, unflinching detail - the misogyny that floods her social media feed every single day. Without searching for it. Without asking for it.

Objectification. Hate. R**e threats. Normalised. Trivialised. Laughed at.

She wrote it because she wants to see change. And at 15, she already understands that change requires doing the hard work - even when that work is writing a public record of your own dehumanisation.

She is 15. She should be worrying about assessments and weekend plans.
You might read this and think: I don’t post that. I don’t think like that.

Maybe. But it’s not just about what you don’t do anymore. It’s about what you do about it.

At BCD Theatre, our work exists at this exact intersection - the silence we expect women and girls to keep, and the courage it takes to break it. And What Will People Say? was built for moments like this one.

This article is uncomfortable to read. Read it anyway.

On 3 February 2022, I typed out a proposal to Kittu at the Indian Subcontinent Crisis and Support Agency. At the time, I wasn’t trying to build a career or start a business. I was just on a mission to tell a story.

I thought I was just asking for a partner for a show.

I didn’t know that this single email would be the catalyst for a seasoned run at Sydney Fringe, a leap to Melbourne, and the creation of my theatre company.

Now that the show has matured and I finally have a moment to breathe, I look back at that email and feel so grateful that I took the leap of reaching out to a stranger about an idea, even when I didn’t fully know where it was heading.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the years since that email, it’s to jump at the opportunities that feel right.

With the support of Lane Cove Council, And What Will People Say is coming home.

We’re so lucky to live in a community that backs bold, important storytelling — especially when it’s created by the people who live here.

This powerful 60-minute theatre work blends Indian classical music, dance and poetry to tell a rarely heard story about love, silence, and survival. It’s moving, honest and already changing hearts.

When we first began this journey, we wanted to tell the stories that rarely get told — the ones behind closed doors, buried under silence, shame and “what will people say.”

And What Will People Say was created in deep consultation with community members, psychologists, social workers and survivors. It gives voice to the layered, complex realities of domestic abuse, especially from the perspective of children and women who chose to stay in abusive relationship 'for' the sake of their children - who often aren't centred in these conversations.

Through Indian classical dance, poetry and live music, this show doesn’t just speak — it feels. It opens space for truth, tenderness and transformation.
