Across the opening weekend, join us for special events including a screening of ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ with director Justin Kurzel, and a curator panel exploring the artist's life, inspirations and legacy.

In this scene from the Hindu Ramayana epic, the hero Rama (an avatar of the god Vishnu) battles his enemy Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka. Rama is supported by his brother Lakshmana and the monkey army led by general Hanuman, son of Vāyu, the god of wind. With arrows, limbs and heads flying, the battle rages for days until Rama shoots Ravana with the divine arrow of the god Brahma. Originating in India, the Ramayana is popular in many parts of Southeast Asia. Ramayana cloths, such as this example, were made in India specifically for trade to Indonesia where they were treasured in Hindu Bali and by the animist Toraja people of Sulawesi.

‘Major, the East Kimberley Bushranger’ brings together paintings by Gija artists Freddie Timms (c1946–2017) and Timmy Timms (c1915–2000) from the Art Gallery’s collection and from generous loans. The works reference the frontier period, during which Aboriginal communities across Australia experienced widespread violence from 1788 to the 1930s, and consider the resistance and survival of Aboriginal families in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Works by Freddie Timms depict Major (c1880s–1908), a Wagiman rebel and bushranger originally from the Daly River region in the Northern Territory. The story of Major was shared with Timms by his grandmother, who survived a massacre at Mistake Creek in the East Kimberley with Major’s help. His paintings of Major adapt Sidney Nolan’s iconic depictions of the nineteenth-century bushranger Ned Kelly, particularly his distinctive black square helmet. Accompanying these works are paintings by Timmy Timms, Freddie’s uncle, which use expansive planes of colour to reveal the harsh histories of massacres across the East Kimberley and their connections to his family.

A remarkable bequest of Australian art is now on display in our Naala Nura building.

The Art Gallery of NSW has received 10 significant works from the private collection of John and Caroline Laws, now joining the Art Gallery’s permanent collection.

Collected over decades and displayed in the couple’s home, the gift includes paintings by John Russell and Rupert Bunny, alongside works by Gwen Barringer, Jane Price, John Glover and Brett Whiteley.

Spanning Australian Impressionism to modern masterworks, this generous bequest reflects a lifelong passion for art and leaves a lasting legacy for the people of New South Wales.

‘Bequests such as this provide vital philanthropic support and strengthen the Art Gallery’s permanent collection in profound and enduring ways.’ Wayne Tunnicliffe, Director of collections and exhibitions.

The John and Caroline Laws collection is now on display.
