Southern Echoes

A tactile dialogue with the Australian landscape, exploring the delicate threshold between botanical chaos and structural form. Constructed from weathered timber and native bark salvaged from the bush, the piece features soft, chalky washes of eucalyptus green, sky blue, and warm ochre—a palette directly mirroring the shifting light of the Australian forest. Wrapping tightly around these heavy wooden columns is a wound trellis of wire, accented with sparse, deliberate clusters of seed beads. These beads are no longer mere decorative embellishments; instead, they evoke resilient native seeds, rare sap, or lichen clinging to sun-bleached branches after fire. By stripping away excess detail, the work emphasizes material honesty and restraint, inviting a quiet meditation on botanical regeneration, gravity, and the enduring spirit of place.

Harbour Heritage - I found this oxidised industrial iron in Sydney Harbour last January 2026. It’s from an old slipway and was wedged in the rock, already rusted, already shaped by the years submerged. The surface is stained with its own timeline of decay. Rust and corrosion partner with gold leaf and oil paint on the same surface. The result is proof that unwanted materials carry powerful memory. This piece has no ending — it has found its place in time, playing a part in maritime history.

I don’t post the finished piece. I post the making of it.

This one’s headed to a prize submission soon — every mark, every hour, is part of the argument the work makes.

The history is the point — even mine.
