Six years ago, to pass those long lockdown days, I bought a block of polymer clay and a small toaster oven. I sat down, made one single figure, looked at the result, and decided it wasn’t good enough. I put everything away.

​That was 2020.

​Now, six years later, I have picked the clay back up. Sitting at my desk this week, the realization hit me: those six years were going to pass regardless of what I did.

​If I had stuck with it - consistently practising making ugly, lopsided, imperfect little figures - I would now have six years of skill and progress behind me. Instead, I have a six year gap and the exact same starting line.

​We often convince ourselves that if we aren't naturally talented at something right out of the gate, it isn't worth our time. We treat beginner-level output as a personal failure rather than a required phase of growth.

​Here is what I am keeping in mind as I start over:

​The clock ticks no matter what. Six years will pass whether you practice a skill or abandon it. You might as well spend that time building something.

​Perfectionism is just self-sabotage in disguise. Expecting mastery on attempt number one is an unreasonable standard that only serves to stop you from trying.

​Action yields experience; avoidance yields nothing. Every bad attempt teaches you something about technique. Giving up simply pauses your learning.

​I missed six years of lessons by giving up on myself, but I am not letting the next six pass the same way.

​If there is something you have been avoiding because you are worried you won't be good at it: start anyway.

Give yourself permission to be a beginner. The time will pass regardless.
