Scouting my own brief on the weekends!

This weekend I headed to one of my all time favourite places in the world - Sofala!

A scenic drive, a swim in the (very shallow) Turon - someone literally brought the kitchen sink - and then off to a different kind of watering hole where the locals were turning one on!

Let’s talk facades.

Designer mansions, bunkers, container homes, isolated farmsteads, suburban houses, beach homes, ski resorts, era specific houses.

We have it all! Non descript to totally unique, any home can be a creative canvas if you have the vision.

The great thing about working in locations is the freedom and creative outlet that we’re given with briefs. We work with directors to find the perfect space for the scenes to unfold, and this involves getting creative with how we see the story moving through location.

Here’s how we work:
You send us your brief, be as vague or specific as you like.
We send you a folder of options
You take a look at your faves on a recce
Book your pick and go shoot!

OR you can DIY using the search function on the Set Book website and have a number of options at your phalanges!

Set in the rural town of Dunburn (and shot in historical Carcoar), The Deb shows off the country landscape and spirit both on screen and behind the scenes.

Any location manager will know that getting a whole town on board to film is no easy feat. We made it work in Carcoar with a rag-tag group of multi-skilled locals who made our lives a little easier and a hell of a lot more fun.

Whether it was parking trucks, shovelling dust, lending us a dog for a shot, cranking out hundreds of coffees or wrangling rogue pub patrons, they came together for the film and I can’t explain how appreciated and instrumental these locals were for us.

Was there some behind the scenes drama? Yes. Did we need the toilets pumped more than we expected? Yes. Was the church accommodation haunted? Unconfirmed.

I’m so glad this gem finally gets to hit the screens, it’s comedy gold with that dry Aussie sarcasm and a splash of a sing-a-long!

Life in locations is a bit like this… you don’t really know what’s going on, you’ve just got to enjoy it.

Things change very quickly day to day in film, so you’ve always got to be ready to roll with the new schedule, shotlist or angle.. even if it means moving unit base so we get the shot we need.

Lucky our jobs also include a hell of a lot of fun, otherwise the chaos just wouldn’t be worth it.

What’s your fave part of being on set? Is it the snacks? Haha 😜

🌊Futuristic Pool House- Maroubra 🌊

What a sunny little stunner! One of our most popular homes has been booked again for another shoot, so we thought - why not celebrate with a dedicated spot on the grid.

This home has seen some things. It’s large backyard and pool brings the tropical vibes, the high ceilings and immense windows create space and light that make this so fun to shoot, it has several kids and adult rooms, a study, 3 living areas and it’s been designed to revolve around the courtyard; at the centre of the Tetris shaped home (you know the shape I’m talking about).

This home has been used for everything from commercials for TVs, furniture, rugs, fashion campaigns, branded content shoots and more.

There are limited dates left before the end of the year so if you’re looking for THE location - give us a yell!

✨Carolina Estate - Dural

One of my favourite homes on our books. This place is huge, has so much character and can play many different roles.

Check out the visual depth in the kitchen (so many angles to shoot from), the colours used to keep it feeling South Carolina, the acres of space for crew parking and essentials. Not to mention the pool, tennis court and horse stables!

Oh and that mint green atrium?! GIMME!

What would you shoot here? A Western? An ad for a toaster oven?

When I’m out and about scouting, I often capture videos of these tiny moments in time. Places and people that I find interesting, which often have nothing to do with the brief, but sometimes they draw me into the story that could be created around them.

As a department that typically focusses so heavily on logistics, I take a great deal of pride in being able to understand and interpret the script and brief, and often find myself having the same cohesive ideas about the various aspects of the location as the director. It’s not something I’ve ever been taught- it’s innate, and probably because I spend so much time in fantasy land in my head.

I love looking back on these little clips I take and remembering the exact place and people, and even how it felt. There’s something so special about film.
