Generation Women Australia Winner Best Spoken Word at Sydney Fringe 2019, Generation Women is a popular storytelling night in Sydney and Melbourne.

Each show, six women representing every decade from the 20s through to the 70s+, share a story centred on a monthly theme. We at Generation Women acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, recognise their continuing connection to land water and culture. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

Last night in Melbourne, a whole room of women danced to Dolly. 💗

Today, this little moment feels even more special.

Dolly showed generations of women that you could be loud, funny, ambitious, generous, glamorous, smart and completely, unapologetically yourself.

Thank you for the music, the joy, the stories and for showing us all how glorious it can be to take up space exactly as you are.

There will only ever be one Dolly. 💗🧡

Melbourne, look who’s back on the mic! ❤️

We are VERY lucky to have the brilliant Nicky Barry back as our Melbourne guest host this month.

Nicky has shared her own stories on our stage, guest hosted for us more than once and become such a loved part of the Generation Women Australia team, so we already know we’re in for a brilliant night (and a LOT of laughing).

A Naarm/Melbourne stand-up comedian and storyteller par excellence, Nicky is also a full-time goddess, mother to four wonderful kidults, founding member of the Comedy Women’s Association and, still our favourite credential, a passionate practitioner of wanton misbehaviour.

She’s also spent many years working on projects supporting marginalised communities, bringing the same warmth, humanity and humour that we absolutely love having on our stage.

We can’t wait to have her back guiding us through six stories from six generations.

Melbourne, you’re in very good hands. ❤️

Look who’s back! ❤️

We feel VERY lucky to have Mon Schafter returning to the Sydney stage this month, this time as our guest host.

If you’ve been to Sydney events before, you might remember Mon as one of our brilliant storytellers. Now we get to hand them the mic for the whole night.

Mon is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and co-host of the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras Parade on ABC TV. They’ve reported for programs including 7.30 and Hungry Beast and are the founding editor of ABCQueer.

And on Wednesday 26 August, Mon will be guiding us through six new stories from six generations of women.

If you’ve been meaning to come along to Generation Women Australia, this is a pretty excellent month to do it.

Newcastle, what a way to finish our first regional NSW tour. ❤️

Last week, you completely packed out our 200-person venue. There genuinely wasn’t a spare seat in the house and we even had to turn away people who arrived without tickets.

A HUGE thank you to every single person who came along, brought a friend, shared our event or told someone else about Generation Women. We don’t take any of it for granted.

Thank you to our incredible storytellers for trusting us with your stories and to our Newcastle charity partner, Hunter Women's Centre, for the incredibly important work you do supporting women in your community.

And a huge thank you to Create NSW , whose support made our first regional tour possible.

Newcastle was the final stop after travelling to Wollongong, Kiama, Mudgee and Bathurst, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to finish.

We really hope we’ll be back. ❤️

Sydney, this show is about the mistakes we're glad we made. 🙌

This August we're diving into My Best Mistake. Six women sharing the failures, missteps and left turns that became the best things that ever happened to them…because sometimes the mess is the whole point.

Our Storyteller Line-up:

Team 20s: Luna Wu is an advocate supporting people with disabilities from multicultural communities, who relocated from China to Australia in 2024 and works to advance social equity, inclusion and community empowerment through lived experience and culturally responsive engagement.

Team 30s: Kate Crowhurst is the host of the Feminist Money podcast, a policy professional by day who makes money a feminist issue by night, challenging why women earn less, grow less wealth and retire into less.

Team 40s: Nicole Velik is a creativity and innovation speaker, facilitator and founder of The Ideas Bodega. A three-time SXSW Sydney speaker and host of Creativity Unpacked and CreativeMornings Sydney, she's spent 18 years helping clients including Nike, Apple, Canva, LEGO, Spotify and the United Nations unlock creative thinking.

Team 50s: Lou Johnson has spent 30 years in publishing, shaping and sharing stories for hundreds of authors, brands and businesses. A few surprise life gear shifts led her to start sharing her own — once she realised they might help others facing the same challenges.

Team 60s: Yumi Lee is CEO of the Older Women's Network NSW, a feminist organisation advancing the rights, dignity and economic security of older women, after years spent supporting women's and children's safety in Nepal and Vietnam.

Team 70s+: Norma Christian grew up in a poor Edinburgh tenement and enlisted in the army at 17, launching a nursing career that took her to Germany. After marrying, raising three children and becoming a single parent, she gave up alcohol in 1983, beginning a new life of sobriety.

Melbourne, this show is about the wrong turns that led somewhere right. 🙌

Our August theme is My Best Mistake. What if the very things we tried to avoid were the making of us? Six women sharing stories of their biggest mistakes and the surprising, beautiful, life-changing places those mistakes led them.

Our Storyteller Line-up:

Team 20s: Skye Cusack is a Dulgubarra Yidinji writer and accidental comedian living in Naarm whose stories make you laugh, cry, and call your therapist. She's publishing two novels in 2027: q***r romcom Checked Out with Penguin and New Adult novel The Dangers of Just One Person with Magabala.

Team 30s: Olivia Richardson is an actor, doctor and aspiring playwright who paused her training in geriatric medicine to study acting full-time. She's exploring what it means to live a more creative life, and is currently developing a one-person show inspired by where medicine and theatre overlap.

Team 40s: Mali Cornish is a writer and lawyer from Melbourne. Her debut novel, Judgement Day, was released in 2023, with her follow-up, The Missing Mother, released by Allen & Unwin in 2026.

Team 50s: Jacinta Parsons is a Melbourne broadcaster and writer who has worked at Triple R and the ABC's Double J, Radio Melbourne and Radio National. She's published three books — Unseen (2020), A Question of Age (2022) and A Wisdom of Age (2025) — and is a chronic illness and anti-ageism advocate who co-chairs Rollercoaster Theatre and teaches at RMIT.

Team 60s: Janty Blair is a proud Butchulla, Mununjali and Woppaburra woman, comedian, nurse, midwife and storyteller. Winner of the 2022 Deadly Funny Grand Final, she uses storytelling to bring joy, challenge perspectives and inspire connection.

Team 70s+: Barbara Kamler is a researcher, poet and storyteller who explores themes of love, memory and mobility. Author of eight academic books, her recent works include Leaving New Jersey (2016), Love, Regardless (2022) and Sophie (2023).
