The NSWMSC represents all medical students across NSW and the ACT. As a medical student in NSW, you automatically become a member of NSWMSC.

NSWMSC COMMITTEE APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

If you’ll be a medical student in NSW or the ACT in 2027 this is your opportunity to get involved with NSWMSC.

All committee positions are open for applications for 2027!

Whether you’re passionate about advocacy, events, medical education, student representation, communications, partnerships or helping shape the direction of NSWMSC we’d love to hear from you.

Applications close: 10 November

Executive applicants will be required to deliver a speech at NSWMSC Council on 17 November, with Executive positions elected by the Presidents of NSW and ACT medical societies.

All other committee positions will proceed through an individual interview process.

As you approach graduation and transition into professional practice, this session will provide a practical overview of what it means to become a registered health practitioner in Australia. You’ll learn about the role of Ahpra and the National Boards, the registration requirements you’ll need to meet, and the professional responsibilities that come with registration. The session will also cover key topics such as professional standards, mandatory notifications, social media, ongoing registration obligations, and how to navigate the graduate registration process smoothly!

We are training more doctors, but where will they go?

Interns are already worried they won’t secure a training position, while government projections show the pool of prevocational doctors could more than double by 2048. At the same time, the proportion progressing into specialty training is projected to fall dramatically.

This isn’t just about doctors’ careers! Australia’s growing bottleneck in medical means greater job uncertainty, burnout and prolonged training while communities continue to face shortages of specialists, particularly in rural and regional Australia.

We invest heavily in educating medical students because Australia needs doctors. However, without enough specialist training positions, that investment is at risk of being wasted.
We need to train doctors AND specialists. Thus, we need a system that actually allows them to progress.

Thank you everyone who came yesterday to the Beyond The Curriculum Symposium! It was great to see your faces and we hope that you enjoyed the event and the experience! A big shout out to the speakers and organisations AMA (NSW) The Doctors Union - ASMOF Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) who attended this event and to our NSWMSC organisers.

NSWMSC will not stop advocating for progressive action and change until the circumstances which burden our medical students are fixed. We’re here to represent you and fight for better.

Whilst yesterday’s news about medical students being excluded from receiving paid placement was disappointing, we encourage you to not lose hope and to keep making noise so that our voices are not drowned out. We all MUST make discourse about our circumstances LOUD and in the mainstream. Spread the word about the Specialty Training Bottleneck and Placement Poverty so that more are informed.
