BRISBANE | Mitch Cairns: Artist’s Mouth – Artist/Curators Talk TODAY 2pm
Join Mitch Cairns in conversation with curators Lucy Latella and Robert Leonard at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane today at 2pm, as part of the opening weekend of Mitch Cairns: Artist’s Mouth, a survey spanning 20 years of the artist’s practice.
Pictured is a detail from Papers: Fixed Chorus, part of a series of screenprints incorporating an erotic, ‘booby’ alphabet developed collaboratively by Mitch and Agatha Gothe-Snape during their early courtship. The series was first exhibited at TCB Inc., Melbourne in 2014.
In his statement accompanying the original exhibition, Mitch proposed the ‘Cigarette cm’ as a unit for measuring time and space, drawing parallels between smoking and printmaking: “As a printing process imbues paper with visual information, the smoking process erases the paper itself, or rather transforms its form so that it may be distributed throughout the atmosphere.”
