👑 A king. A curse. A daughter he was told to sacrifice.

Set in the heart of the ancient Botswana savanna, The Legend of Ntiti and Ntitietsana tells the story of a royal lineage haunted by a dark omen. To lift a brewing curse, a troubled king is once advised to sacrifice his unborn daughter, Ntitietsana, or risk her being followed by a “dark cloud” forever. The king spares her, but the prophecy takes form in the girl's spirit. Where her sister Ntiti embodies grace and traditional respect, Ntitietsana grows into a sharp-tongued and defiant princess, seemingly possessed by the very darkness the king once tried to outrun.

Rich with folklore, prophecy and the bonds and rivalries of sisterhood, it's a captivating addition to our Short Film Program.

✍️ Meet the panel: we're delighted to welcome Malla Nunn to The Art of Storytelling.

Malla is the author of four internationally published crime novels set in apartheid-era South Africa: A Beautiful Place to Die, Let the Dead Lie, Blessed Are the Dead and Present Darkness, which between them have received two Edgar Award nominations, a Davitt Award and two Antony Award nominations. Her young adult fiction has been equally acclaimed: her debut YA novel When the Ground is Hard won the LA Times Book Prize for Best YA novel and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards, and Sugar Town Queens was named a CBCA notable book of the year. Her crime novels are currently being developed for television.

Born and raised in Eswatini and now based in Sydney, Malla brings a deep and versatile command of storytelling across page and screen, exactly the spirit of our panel on the craft of building characters and stories that resonate.

🎙️ Meet the screenwriter behind a Tribeca premiere.
We’re excited to welcome multi-award-winning screenwriter Huna Amweero to the panel for our Art of Storytelling Masterclass. Huna’s writing spans feature film, television and short-form content — she co-wrote Blaze, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won the 2022 AWGIE Award for Best Original Feature Film Screenplay, and has since written for Netflix’s Surviving Summer (Season 2) and the series Krystal Klairvoyant. In 2023 she received the Betty Roland Prize for Scriptwriting at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and she has just been awarded the 37 South PFM Prize, which will see her attend Film London’s Production Finance Market.
Huna joins fellow panellists Zamo Mkhwanazi, Malla Nunn and Jenevieve Chang, moderated by Ratidzo Mambo, for a session exploring how ideas become stories, stories become scripts, and scripts become films — followed by an audience Q&A.

Being You, directed by Minenhle Luthuli, is a striking South African short making its Australian Premiere as part of our Short Film Program. A screenwriter is blindsided mid-press-interview when a question about her past triggers a panic attack. She faints — and wakes up in the past, face to face with her younger self, in a race to steer her away from a mistake she has carried the regret of for years.
A tender, time-bending story about forgiveness, and about the conversations we all wish we could have with who we used to be.

☕ Sometimes belonging begins with a cup of tea.

Borders, Bonds, Belonging, directed by Hawanatu Bangura, is a tender Australian short screening as part of our Short Film Program. On a cosy Sunday afternoon, a group of migrants gather over tea to share their stories, and in doing so, weave together threads of identity, resilience, and the quiet hope that grows when a new country slowly begins to feel like home.

Gentle, intimate and deeply human, it's a film that speaks directly to the diaspora experience at the heart of our festival and our community here in Western Sydney: the small moments of connection through which we build belonging, far from where we began.

🎤 The screening is part of our Short Film Program and will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers, a wonderful chance to hear directly from the voices behind these stories.

✍️ Meet one of the voices joining our panel The Art of Storytelling: Jenevieve Chang.

Jenevieve is a screenwriter, story developer and performer whose career spans the UK, China and Australia. She is currently BA Discipline Lead in Screenwriting at AFTRS, and has previously been Development Executive at ABC Drama & Comedy and at Screen Australia, Creative Executive at Arclight Films, and Senior Course Manager at NIDA. Her development work includes collaborations with Malthouse Theatre, Griffin Theatre and Monkey Baa Theatre here in Australia, and The National Theatre, The Young Vic and Yellow Earth Theatre in the UK.

She is also the author of the multi-generational memoir The Good Girl of Chinatown (Penguin Random House, 2017), and her award-winning play Yong was presented at the Sydney Opera House in 2023. Few people understand the craft of story, across page, stage and screen, quite as deeply.

Jenevieve joins our panel The Art of Storytelling, an afternoon dedicated to the craft of storytelling: how to build characters that resonate, how stories find their audience, and how authentic, distinct voices carve out their place in an industry hungry for them. Whether you're a writer, a filmmaker, or simply someone who loves a great story, it's an afternoon not to be missed.

In 1957, Kwame Nkrumah led Ghana to independence, making it the first sub-Saharan African colony to gain independence from European colonial rule, a defining moment in African history and the Pan-African movement.

Behind the camera was Chris Hesse, Nkrumah’s personal cinematographer, who documented Ghana’s journey through independence and the transformative years that followed.

The Eyes of Ghana, directed by Ben Proudfoot, follows the now 93-year-old Hesse as he works to preserve a remarkable archive of more than 1,300 film reels — hundreds of hours of footage capturing Nkrumah, Ghana, and a continent entering a new era.

It’s a powerful story about history, memory, and the people who made sure these images of Africa’s liberation would not be forgotten.

A rare opportunity to experience this extraordinary chapter of African history on the big screen.
