'My work reflects the quiet landscape found in transit – in a walk, commute, or pause before arrival – where routine intersects with personal reflection. The paintings affirm that ordinary experiences hold emotional weight and meaning, and that the paths we travel daily may shape who we are becoming. The act of commuting is a physical conduit, a mental space where thoughts drift, anxieties surface and dreams begin to form. The work invites viewers to recall their own moments of in between times when progress felt subtle, unmarked yet formative – perpetually “on the way.”'

Jon Campbell’s painting in the Salon, John Luvs Annie (Annie Grant), is a portrait of his wife Annie.

‘For this year’s Archibald entry, I was inspired by two of my favourite American figurative painters, Alex Katz and Wayne Thiebaud who have both made many beautiful paintings of their wives. I prefer to paint portraits of people I know and admire, and no one fits this description better than my wife Annie.’

Kathrin Longhurst’s portrait, Keeping Count, portrays Sherele Moody, who documents women and children lost to violence.

‘Our initial meeting evolved into a strong friendship based on our shared commitment to confronting male violence.

Drawing on her background in journalism, Sherele’s research informs public discourse, policy, and brings comfort to victim’s families. Behind her, a mural she maintained in Melbourne of femicide victims speaks to erasure and resistance. This portrait honours her relentless act of naming, counting, and refusing to let these lives disappear.’

‘If we look at the list of artists relegated to this year’s Salon des Refusés, at a glance we see names such as Ross Laurie, John R. Walker, Mary Tonkin, Euan Macleod, Tony Costa and Robert Malherbe – all noted landscapists. Are we to believe that these artists, and many others who submitted entries, produced work of inferior quality to the mishmash at the AGNSW? It’s not merely implausible, it’s insulting to artists of ability and integrity.’

‘If you want to feel especially gaslit this year, go to SH Ervin gallery, across the city, for the Salon des Refusés. This is the annual showcase of the paintings rejected by the Archibald prize judges – but there are so many portraits that could be swapped into either exhibition without anyone batting an eyelid..’

We are saddened by the passing of Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO and extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Dame Marie was a wonderful supporter of the arts and regular visitor to the Gallery and Cafe. Here she is pictured at the 2013 opening of Peter Rushforth: All Fired Up, which she also officially opened.

In 2014 the Gallery hosted a farewell dinner to thank and acknowledge her outstanding service to the people of New South of Wales.

We will miss her gracious presence and unfailing support.
