Max Berry tackles a broad range of subjects, from landscapes and figures to mythic scenes and seemingly banal everyday objects. His paintings carry an allegorical atmosphere and possess a quiet poetic power. He works like a collector, amassing libraries of material that intrigues him without always being fully understood, and only after working through these images in various stages does he bring them to the canvas, where he paints in oils relatively quickly, sometimes finishing a piece in a single session. The resulting pictures build a world where motifs can be symbolic, obscured or warped, expressing the slipperiness of representation through painting and the inherently subjective nature of experience and memory. Berry’s understated works invite careful contemplation, offering no easy readings but instead asking the viewer to sit with what is uncertain, what is half remembered, and what painting itself can and cannot hold.
