I thought these tracks were dead.

Turns out… they were just waiting. 👀

I’ve been digging through the old hard drives and found nearly 30 minutes of unfinished Thomas Datt music from a chapter of my life I walked away from.

And honestly?

What the f**k was I doing leaving this behind? 😂

There’s something here. Something I can still hear.

So here it is.

Eight little fragments from The Lost Album. Music that was never finished, never released, and has been sitting there all these years waiting for me to find it again.

This is a glimpse of what the dream once sounded like…

…and where it was heading before I stepped away.

Maybe the story wasn’t finished after all. 🛸✨

When was the last time you were making music and it was just... working?

Not perfect because the mix was flawless or every sound was exactly right.

Perfect because the core idea was communicating something to you.

You felt it.

And I think there's something really important in remembering what your body was doing in that moment.

Were you moving? Smiling? Getting goosebumps? Did you suddenly want to turn it up? Did you play the same section again because you wanted to experience it one more time?

Those reactions happen before you've analysed whether something is technically "good."

They're telling you that something in the music connected.

The danger is that we can then spend another three hours refining the track and slowly lose contact with the thing that made us respond in the first place.

Refinement absolutely matters. Craft matters. Technical ability matters.

But learning to recognise what was already working before you started fixing things matters too.

Sometimes the most valuable reference for where a track needs to go isn't another producer's record.

It's your own first response to it.

25+ years producing music, and I still overthink sometimes.

Experience doesn't make you immune to doubt.

I've spent a ridiculous amount of my life making music. I've released records, played them to crowds around the world, worked with incredible artists, and had plenty of moments where I've thought, yeah, I know what I'm doing.

And then I'll sit down in the studio and spend hours questioning a decision I probably already knew the answer to.
The difference now isn't that I never get stuck.

It's that I'm much better at recognising when I've stopped listening to the music and started listening to the noise in my own head.

That's something I wish more producers understood about experience.

You don't eventually reach some magical level where every creative decision becomes obvious and self-doubt disappears. You develop a deeper relationship with yourself as an artist. You start recognising your patterns sooner. You learn when to keep pushing, when to walk away, and when to trust the thing you felt before your mind got involved.

Maybe becoming a better producer isn't about eliminating uncertainty.

Maybe it's about learning how to create without letting uncertainty make every decision for you.

I believe music is a reflection of your internal state.

Your emotions. Your thoughts. The things you're processing. Sometimes even things you haven't completely understood yet.

They find their way into the music.

That's one of the things I've always found fascinating about creating. You can sit down thinking you're just writing a melody, choosing sounds or building a track, but you're leaving pieces of yourself everywhere.

The tension you create. The space you leave. The melodies you're drawn towards. The moments you can't stop listening to.

It's like looking into a mirror, except the reflection comes back as sound.
And maybe that's part of why making music can feel so vulnerable.

Because when something is genuinely yours, you're not just showing somebody what you made.

You're letting them hear something that came from inside you.
Your music isn't separate from you. It's you, expressed as sound.

This 2003 track was drowning in modern mixes. So, a slight remaster was needed to bring back its clarity and punch, closing the gap with newer sounds.

You probably already know when you're overthinking your music.

You feel it when you've listened to the same section twenty times. When you're changing something you were happy with an hour ago. When you're opening another plugin, rewriting another melody, or wondering what somebody else would do.

But knowing you're overthinking isn't necessarily enough to stop it.

The better question is why.

Because the same behaviour can come from completely different places.

Sometimes you're avoiding a creative decision. Sometimes you've stopped trusting your own response. Sometimes you're trying to make something perfect because committing to it means accepting that it might not be.

And sometimes you've simply been inside the track for so long that you've lost perspective.

That's why I'm less interested in telling producers to "stop overthinking" and more interested in understanding what's actually happening underneath it.

Once you can recognise the pattern, you have a much better chance of changing how you respond to it.

You don't always need another answer.
Sometimes you need to understand why you stopped trusting the one you already had.
