bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company

bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company an independent Sydney based theatre collective We believe that independent theatre offers new opportunities for diverse conversation and innovative staging.

bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company is an independent Sydney based collective producing and developing work that showcases new voices. We encompass: diversity in casting; the reimagining of classics; telling new stories from new communities; platforms for emerging artists; and the stories and voices missing from our national stages. At bAKEHOUSE we challenge our artists to embrace the limitations of indepen

dent theatre, to explore new ways to inspire big conversations, to strip back the artifice, to create extraordinary and memorable solutions. We challenge our audiences to engage the imagination and join us in the making of meaning.

Feat development: AVERSION OF YOU by Byron Davis, a love story and a romcom but not quite in the way those words usually suggest. IN REHEARSAL
September 2026: How My Light Is Spent by Alan Harris pres by Secret House

Jimmy is 34, lives with his mum and works at Newport's only drive-through doughnut restaurant. Kitty is an adult chatline operator, living in the granny flat of a topiary enthusiast. It’s an unlikely connection, but for Jimmy, things are finally looking up. Then he loses his job. And starts to disappear - starting with his hands.

Funny, surreal and unexpectedly moving, Alan Harris’s How My Light Is Spent is a tender story about loneliness, desire and the need to be seen.

+ KXT Underground
COOKED by Lana Page & Angel Duggan

Christmas this year is cooked… maybe New Years will be better?
Director: Laura Jackson with Angel Duggan, Lana Page, Sally Evans

KXT Underground presents surprise small seasons for intimate audiences in the KXT Vault, downstairs on Broadway. With so much work being developed by Sydney’s thriving community of Independent Artists, there is a significant and concerning lack of supported spaces available to artists. The KXT Underground program is uncurated program, a safe space for risky work.

Have you heard the news? Secret House are back at KXT! Following on from the enormous success of Shooting Hedda Gabler at Seymour Centre, and the acclaimed season at KXT on Broadway of Till The Stars Come Down, they’re back to their intimate best with another Alan Harris Australian Premiere.

HOW MY LIGHT IS SPENT
By Alan Harris
11 – 26 September
Funny, surreal and unexpectedly moving, Alan Harris’s How My Light Is Spent is a tender story about loneliness, desire and the need to be seen.

Jimmy, who is 34 and lives with his mum, can’t pinpoint the exact moment that he began to disappear. Yet he wakes up one morning to discover that his hands have gone, to be followed by his ears and other extremities, creating a profound sense of panic that there will soon be nothing left.

Independent theatre is crucial to the ecosystem of theatre, both in Sydney and across Australia. It’s where you’ll see recent graduates and Early Career actors do their first work; emerging designers get to test out their ideas; new plays are born, developed and showcased. It’s pretty much the only place in Australia where you’ll see casts of 10+ often with experienced professionals working alongside young and emerging artists.

Artists who have done their first work at KXT on Broadway have very quickly gone onto roles at Belvoir, Griffin, STC, Ensemble and more. Plays have been programmed at other venues, providing an opportunity to restage existing work in a supported environment, and young playwrights have received their first commissions. Directors and designers develop their practice, meet their people and build their tribe.

THIS WEEK at KXT on Broadway
We’re welcoming the crew behind EQUUS. Director / designer BROCKMAN has some neat little tricks planned, so it’s a busy week of production.

Previews Friday. This season is selling very fast so be sure to book early. Presented by Daniel Cottier

“saddle up for an Equus like you've never seen it before. Visionary director and designer BROCKMAN joins forces with Daniel Cottier Productions to reimagine the modern classic as a gripping exploration of passion, fatness, fetishisation, and the price of normality. Expect a visually striking, psychologically-charged production with an extraordinary cast that promises to be one of the theatrical events of the season”
