bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company

bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company an independent Sydney based theatre collective We believe that independent theatre offers new opportunities for diverse conversation and innovative staging.

bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company is an independent Sydney based collective producing and developing work that showcases new voices. We encompass: diversity in casting; the reimagining of classics; telling new stories from new communities; platforms for emerging artists; and the stories and voices missing from our national stages. At bAKEHOUSE we challenge our artists to embrace the limitations of indepen

dent theatre, to explore new ways to inspire big conversations, to strip back the artifice, to create extraordinary and memorable solutions. We challenge our audiences to engage the imagination and join us in the making of meaning.

Co-Directed by Grace Malouf & Charley Allanah with Kate Bookallil, Richard Hilliar, Josh Merten, Shan-Ree Tan

At the height of her campaign for President of the Australian Medical Association, renowned surgeon Melissa Annous faces an unthinkable crisis. Her son Alexei, an Olympic hopeful, reveals to her and his father Robbo that he has a secret that could upend all of their ambitions.

This is theatre that refuses easy answers, demanding audiences confront what it means to own – and alter – our bodies.

“So many of our writers get their first break at KXT, so it’s great to be able to formalise this partnership and strengthen the pathway between training and industry. There’s something transformative for emerging writers about seeing their work in front of audiences for the first time, and having heard early pitches for these works, I’m excited to finally see them on stage!” Joe Hepworth, NIDA Head of Dramatic Writing

National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and bAKEHOUSE have joined forces to create a new partnership designed to champion emerging Australian playwrights and bring bold new writing to the stage in the Festival of New Writers, New Works at KXT on Broadway.

Ruby Blinkhorn has launched the KXT x NIDA partnership in style – it’s not to be missed.

Offering genuine pathways for some of NIDA’s fresh new voices in the MFA playwriting program, New Writers, New Works is designed to fast track promising careers and build profile in a highly supportive environment. Shoutout to Zoe Hollyoak, Mat Lee, and Rebecca Duke who have worked with the KXT team to get the job done for this season
