The energetic home for creative production in the centre of Western Sydney, Parramatta Artists’ Studios (PAS) has supported hundreds of artists since opening in 2006. These school holidays, head to Parramatta Artists Studios in Granville for a hands-on and thoughtful workshop. Studio artist Keroshin Govender will guide young people aged 9 and up through a creative activity that explores language, identity and the stories behind our names.

Participants will learn about Keroshin’s practice of translating names between Tamil and English, and reflect on the meaning and origins of their own names. They will then create a painted terracotta clay tablet featuring their name in different scripts, along with its meaning and personal symbols inspired by their cultural and linguistic heritage.

Last week, Mithra K sat down with independent writer, editor and teacher June Miskell to talk about her practice and reflect on her time here at PAS as the inaugural Transoceanic Worldings Artist-in-Residence.

More recently, Mithra hosted an Open Studio at PAS Granville, for which she created her first sarappakkalam, an intricate floor drawing and practice originating from Kerala, India – made here with organic materials including sandalwood and turmeric sourced from South Asian grocers in neighbouring Harris Park.

Read Mithra and June’s in-conversation in full on our website at the link in bio while scrolling through these sumptuous images from her recent Open Studio.

As she bids farewell to Parramatta Artists Studios, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Nithya Nagarajan.

During her time at PAS, Nithya developed and led a wide range of programs including feedback, PAS Together, artist commissions and curatorial projects, and major partnerships across the Asia Pacific. She consistently facilitated artist-led spaces grounded in warmth and discernment – places where artists could share work, test ideas and build communities of practice over time. Nithya was also a champion of visiting curators and artists, connecting people across Western Sydney, interstate and internationally, and opening up conversations that extended far beyond the studio.

She brings vision and openness to everything she does – centring artists, listening closely, and advocating for the conditions that allow experimentation to thrive. Nithya has been a passionate advocate for access and inclusion at PAS, helping ensure our programs are welcoming, responsive and genuinely supportive of diverse artists and communities.

She also played a key role in building and sustaining strategic sector partnerships and creating new pathways and ambitious contexts for PAS artists.

Last year, Nithya was named one of eight recipients of the Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship. As she turns her focus toward her own practice, we hope this investment offers her the time and support she has so consistently created for others. She will be sorely missed, but the impact of her work at PAS will be felt for years to come.

Thank you, Nithya
