Six months after my move, the art studio is still a mess with packing boxes everywhere, but I actually did some work in it for the first time today. It’s a brilliant workspace, even with the mess! There’s always tomorrow to tidy up 😂

So nice getting back into plein air sketching today at Little Manly. The weather was beautiful but I’m a little rusty and made my yachts too big. I think the Super Maxis must have been visiting! :)

For those who haven’t seen Dangerously Modern yet at AGNSW, you have until mid February to see it. I‘ve included some of my favourites from the 220 paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures on display. Some well known, others not so much, but all wonderful. Apparently the title, Dangerously Modern comes from a label given to Thea Proctor on her return to Sydney. It explores fifty trailblazing women who defied society’s expectations and broke free of Victorian constraints, travelling overseas to pursue art careers; an intrusion much resented by some of their male counterparts.
There is also a sprinkling of photos which are very insightful. I loved the way the spectators yesterday were so friendly, chatting to strangers and sharing a mutual admiration of the works.

Thoroughly enjoyed an early members’ viewing of the Ron Mueck exhibition at AGNSW. Don’t want to spoil it by putting too many photos here, but loved the hyper-realism, sensitivity and empathy evoked by these works. Covering many different ages and aspects of the human condition, his Woman with Shopping made me think of the exhaustion of parenthood where a weary looking mum, carrying the shopping seems quite oblivious to her sweet baby gazing up into her face. The young couple, who at first evoke the sweetness of youthful relationships, make us query what lies beneath the surface as his tight grip around her stiffened wrist and hand imply something else. The slightly gangly young woman in a swimsuit looks ill at ease with her growing body in this intimate insight into a tender age. No matter the age or circumstance, he gives us a visceral and tender insight into the many complexities of humanity. (My interpretation only..)
