Before you write another song
Do these 5 science based non-musical exercises to boost your creativity.

5 IMPROV
Improv helps you create without judgement, boosts mood, social connection and attention.
After improv with Lindsay Drummond () I feel more confident, creative, authentic and present.

4 THERAPY
Therapy helps express your emotions and expand your perspective on life.
Before therapy my life was cold, numb, limited.
After therapy it feels colourful and meaningful.
This improves my lyrics.
I recommend a therapist who has experience in Attachment Science and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT).

3 EXERCISE
Exercise improves creative thinking, mental health, energy and focus.
The latest research shows it is as effective as antidepressants.
I’ve been running or lifting weights almost every day since I was 19.
Some of my best songs were written at the gym.

2 MEDITATION
Before I meditate my mind is noisy and chaotic.
After I meditate I feel like the person I want to be - calm, creative and loving.
Meditation increases gray matter in your pre-frontal cortex which means you have better attention, emotion regulation and self control.

1 SLEEP
Sleep is the most powerful and most slept-on creative superpower of all.
It improves creativity, focus, energy, mental health and physical health.
In R.E.M sleep, your brain reorganises and makes new connections - this is literally where creativity is born.

BONUS: NATURE
92% of studies show spending time in nature will reduce your stress, anxiety and depression.
Even just a short walk outside boosts focus, mood and creativity.
When producing with we would often go outside when we were feeling stuck.

As an Artist Coach I use all 6 exercises in my own life and I share everything I’ve learned with the artists I work with.
If you're an artist who wants to build the skills, systems and mindset to create a sustainable music career

Before you sign a label advance or grant - read this:

I get it.
You’re an artist working hard to keep the wheels spinning.
If only you had more money so you could take a breath and just focus on the music.
And yes it would help, for a while…
But it would also come at a cost.

I’ve worked with artists earning 6 figure incomes who struggled to pay me.
70% of lottery winners spend all their money in 5 years and 30% file for bankruptcy .
Many people (including artists) don’t understand how to make and keep money.
So taking a shortcut to money can actually hurt you.

An advance or grant might not feel like a shortcut.
It feels like a smart business decision.
That's what makes it dangerous.
Because while you're spending someone else's money…
You're not learning how to make your own.

When you bootstrap your music career…
You’re forced to sit in the pain.
The pain of not making money.
The pain of no one caring.
But pain is the best teacher.
If you bring courage, commitment and curiosity to the pain you’ll learn some life changing lessons.

You stop asking:
“How do I get a deal?”
And start asking:
“How do I build something people find valuable?”
“Who do I have to become?”
“What parts of me need to die?”

You learn psychology and the deep existential reasons why people do what they do.
You start facing your fears and becoming a version of yourself you never knew existed.
You start showing up like your life depends on it…
Because it does.

And then after years of pain, uncertainty and failure…
Everything clicks.
And the money that label or government offered you will seem trivial
Because you have the confidence, knowledge and systems to make it yourself.

Building an artist career can be hard, confusing and lonely.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
An artist coach guides and supports you every step of the way.
Helping you build the music business of your dreams
and become the artist you were born to be.

Comment “COACH” if you’re ready to build.

Without these 5 Assets - Artists FAIL
After working with hundreds of artists over almost 2 decades
I’ve found 5 assets which determine whether an artist makes it or not.

Most artists only build 1 or 2
But if you build all 5 you will be operating like the top 1% of artists.

5 SKILLS
You need these foundational skills to make your music:
Songwriting
Production
Performance (on mic, camera, stage)

4 SALES
You need to learn how to make money and master your:
Business
Marketing
Resources (financial, community, network)

3 STYLE
You need to find your unique style and show it through:
Visual branding
Photos
Videos
Sound

2 SELF
The journey to artist mastery can be long, hard and painful
So you need to make your mind a temple.
You'll need:
Growth mindset
Discipline
Self love

1 STORY
If you want to reach iconic status like Michael Jackson, you’ll need a strong:
Origin story
Mission
Vision
This is the secret ingredient which turns listeners into superfans.

You can outsource some of these to a label or agency
But the more you control in-house, the more sustainable your career becomes.

SUPERFAN PSYCHOLOGY
Here are the 4 psychological reasons why people listen to music
And how to use them to create superfans

4 Status & Survival
Based on science
People use social media to increase their perceived status in society
When someone uses a trending song
That’s often what they’re doing
Why? Because higher status means better chances of survival.
And one of the most powerful ways humans raise their status
is by belonging to the winning culture

Songs like “the end of the beginning” and “Golden” are great songs on their own
But when they become a cultural symbol it's not just about the song
It's about people wanting to belong
While it might be hard to make your own version of Stranger Things
You can create a mini netflix series on social media by documenting your journey
When people see you’re on a meaningful mission that could change the world
You become the cultural movement people want to be a part of

3 Nervous System Regulation
The most common reason we listen to music - is to change how we feel
Like perk up at a party
Or calm down in bed

So it's worth asking - how does your music fit into people's lives?
If people listen to your music at the gym
Maybe build more of a brand around fitness and health
This opens doors for content ideas, song ideas and brand collaborations

2 Empathy and Validation
Have you ever heard a lyric and thought
“Man, that’ s exactly how I feel”
That's because you felt seen

So when you’re writing
And a lyric feels too raw or real to keep
Think about the younger version of yourself
Crying alone in a room who feels misunderstood
How would they feel when they hear it?

1 Identify projection
When someone wears your merch or even gets a tattoo
They go from “i like this artist” to “i am this artist”
They are using you as a tool to express their own identity
That’s why it’s so important to have a strong mission and story
Make it bold and clear
You may get some haters
But you’ll get some lovers to

If you’re an artist and want to connect with your superfans

The biggest co-writing mistake I see artists make
Is going into the studio with no plan

While it can be freeing and healthy to let go and write whatever comes up
It’s not an effective long term strategy
And it can harm your brand and business
By having no plan you’re letting the other people in the room determine what your artist story is
And the problem with that is
They’re not the artist…
You are.

Do this instead:
Plan out your next 12 songs before you co-write with anyone
Plan the title, message, artwork and the role of the song in context of your artist story
That way when when you enter the studio
You can show this to your co-writers and they can help you execute your vision
Using their unique skills

This means you’ll write more authentic songs, in less time, spend less money and find your creative team much easier

Remember, your fans like you because of your unique story
Not because you wrote the song with some award winning person
