In 2026 the AWO welcomed back the celeste to its programmed. A light, bell-like instrument, easily identifiable in pieces such as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, or John Williams’ Harry Potter theme.

We were thrilled to have Susanne Powell join us this year to play this beautiful instrument in Stravinsky’s Petrushka.

On the 19th of August, the day of our first performance in Melbourne, some of our players took time aside to lead masterclasses with our University Partner, the University of Melbourne.

August 26th, 2011. The AWO's opening night, conducted by Simone Young AM.

You would have thought we had the foresight to get concert photos of our first performance, but alas we have this gem instead (featuring our original logo!). Leon Coward, an attendee of the performance, went home that night and drew from memory the stage he just witnessed. It's one of our dearest treasures that's hung in our office since it was gifted to us.

Happy Birthday to the Australian World Orchestra, may there be many more birthdays to come! 🎂
