Redfern Art Asylum

Redfern Art Asylum Private residence, art space, working studio, former guesthouse, and occasional spectacular party venue

Redfern Art Asylum is a working studio and former guesthouse above the bars and cafes of Redfern. It’s the longtime home of writer and artist Jack Laurian Pascoe, and the place where most of the videos for Philosophilia (http://philosophilia.video) are shot, and much of the content on philosophilia.com.au is written. The Art Asylum is proudly politically engaged: we take advice from local Indigeno

us elders, maintain active support of artists and asylum-seekers, support sustainability initiatives, advocate worker organisation, and fly the rainbow flag.

Hello art lovers!

I’m Jaqi—AKA Pax—artist in residence at Redfern Art Asylum, and I have some exciting news to share.

Something very new and different is coming—in the weeks ahead I’ll be launching a program of Airbnb Experiences! You’ll be able to visit this amazing space, tour the apartment, play in the studio, and engage in a wide range of creative activities, either with serious commitment, or just for fun.

Stand by for a major revamp: new logo, new photos, new possibilities!

Hi, I’m Jaqi Pascoe, host and artist in residence at Redfern Art Asylum.

I’ve recently taken to running my popular workshop *The Art and Business of Life Modelling* as a three-hour, one-to-one instructional.

If you’d like to learn how to become an artist’s model, this is the course to do—comprehensive, eye-opening, and fun. As any artist can tell you, a good model inspires and engages the artists; a bad one can ruin the whole session: life modelling isn’t rocket science, but it is a craft.

There are very few courses in this subject available anywhere—this is one of only two in Sydney, and the only one devised and run by a professional model with 20 years’ industry experience.

The course is geared to the Sydney industry and conducted here at the Art Asylum, although adapted Zoom sessions are possible by arrangement. If attending in person, bring a friend and you will each receive a discount.

NB: Nudity, while required in the industry, is optional during the training—contact me for more information.

I’ve started a new monthly column…

Here in my secret bohemian palace above the hotspots of Redfern Street, I’ve been watching the world outside my windows – and on my TV screen – change dramatically for 25 years.

I’ve been doing a little overdue gardening on the terrace—potting, transplanting, rearranging—and I must say, even on this grey and windy summer evening, it’s looking lovely.

It’s good to be back home after a week away. I see small signs there was a big party here a week ago—it’s all cleaned up, but certain things are out of place…

We’ve had high drama here this month—it’s been a very difficult time. But we did get a beautiful new (old) cherry Chesterfield lounge.

This video on grieving was originally conceived as an extra release, reflecting on the recent death of my father (among less personal sources of grief). But ...

Philosophilia has released a new video.

Get your fierce feminist vision of power and gender here, along with a good dose of Art Asylum interiors.

There’s even a garden scene.

Why do we distrust women, especially in public life? You won't like the answer... it's creepy. But that's patriarchy for you.
