The Loaded Dog pays tribute to Jenny Williams who passed away last week in the UK. Jenny’s contribution to the Sydney folk scene was a significant one.
For many years she ran the monthly North by North West Poetry and Folk Club in North Ryde and later in Gladesville – Providing a welcoming performance space for inexperienced performance to offer one or two pieces alongside a featured artist.
As well as hosting the club Jenny frequently offered a floor spot herself and contributed to many a fine singing session. My Husband’s got no courage in Him and similarly feminist songs were particular favourites with Jen, as well as offerings like the gruesome tale Rickety Ticketty Tin/The Irish Ballad, from the pen of Tom Lehrer.
Jenny was sang soprano with Solidarity Choir for many years, as well as teaming up for a while with her then partner Sue Gee to perform as Lemon Tart.
Jenny met Rob Williams, who was in the UK online, through the online folk community Mudcat. Their shared love of all things folk grew into a romance. They married at St Albans Folk Festival, with much merriment, music and Morris dancing. Jenny relocated to the UK.
We send our support and condolences to Rob Williams, Jenny's daughter Sammi Lucille Carter and everyone who will miss Jenny's vibrant presence and frequent contributions around the campfire. Thanks, Jen. Rest in peace.
