🎶 Meet Australian composer Kevin Barker!

Kevin Barker’s music is deeply inspired by the natural world, landscape, and our profound connection to the places we inhabit. His contemporary art music explores the relationship between the human soul and the world around us.

After a career as a jazz musician, composer and arranger—working with artists including Don Burrows, Phil Wilson and James Morrison—Kevin has increasingly focused on choral music and art song. His work has been performed by leading ensembles including AVÉ, Moorambilla Voices, Voces8, The Song Company, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows and the Leichhardt Espresso Chorus.

A composer with a distinctive voice and a deep love of both music and the natural world, Kevin has composed a beautiful new Australian suite called Migrating Birds for the LEC and it is the highlight of our A Search for Home concert in September!

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that the incredible Acacia Quartet will be performing with us at our upcoming concert, A Search for Home, this September. 🎶❤️

Formed in 2010, Acacia Quartet is one of Australia’s most respected string ensembles. With 12 albums, two ARIA Music Awards nominations for Best Classical Album, an APRA-AMCOS Art Music Award nomination, and performances across Australia and internationally, they have built a reputation for inventive programs and a wonderful commitment to Australian composers.

They’ve performed everywhere from the Sydney Opera House and City Recital Hall to venues across regional Australia and overseas — and now we’re delighted to have them joining Leichhardt Espresso Chorus again!

Their beautiful strings will add something very special to A Search for Home, and we can’t wait to share the stage with them. 🎻🎶

Leichhardt Espresso Chorus invites you on a musical journey of belonging, love, loss, renewal and hope in A Search for Home, a concert at the historic Hunter Baillie Church in Annandale on Sunday 27th September at 4pm.

At the heart of the program is Australian composer Kevin Barker’s powerful choral cantata The Last Migration, conducted by Aija Draguns and performed with the acclaimed Acacia Quartet.
Inspired by the extraordinary annual migration of shorebirds from Siberia to Australia, The Last Migration traces a profound circular journey: departure, endurance, return — and the enduring pull of home.

Surrounding this major work are intimate choral pieces that explore what it means to search for somewhere, or someone, to belong.

Come and be part of an evening where voices, strings and stories come together.
