Gallery LNL is pleased to participate in the 10th edition of Sydney Contemporary (Sydney Contemporary) with ‘Lament’, a curated presentation of ceramics, paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture by Australian and Korean artists.

To voice a lament is to refuse to surrender the memory of what was lost. It is to risk the possibility that for the world to shimmer, something must be left unhealed. For Lament, artists found within the depths of blackness, the movement of creative expression, and the way for sincere overcoming.

For the installation sector, the gallery will present ‘Project ’ — a pavilion that arranges an intimate, private encounter with Choi Youngwook’s paintings from his ‘Karma’ series. Developed in collaboration with interior design practice Studio Chen Lu (Studio Chen Lu), the pavilion, constructed from wood and technical paper inserts, has been conceived as a “house of restoration”, offering a moment of stillness amidst the bustle of an art fair.

Participating artists include: Kevin Connor, Gary Deirmendjian (Gary Deirmendjian), Koo Bohnchang (Bohnchang Koo), Sassy Park (Sassy Park), Kim Syyoung (Artist Kimsyyoung (Korea,1957)), Chung Miok and Choi Youngwook.

‘Moon Jar; An Axis’ co-curated by Hyeyoung Cho (Hyeyoung Songhyun Cho) closes tomorrow, Friday 21 August.

This exhibition explores Korean and Australian artists’ engagement with the Moon Jar together with those forms it brings forth, like the moon. The Moon Jar is widely regarded as an emblem of Korean aesthetic sensibilities, yet it is also the site of a continual reimagining across media by Korea’s contemporary artists. Axis establishes a cross-cultural discourse between Korean and Australian artists, examining at once the continuity of traditional practice, as well as the transformation which results from resituating the Moon Jar within a cultural context far removed from its historical beginnings.

Gallery LNL is delighted to be participating in this year’s edition of Frieze Seoul (Frieze), presenting in the Material Practice sector. The presentation brings together ceramics, sculptures and paintings by leading Australian and Korean artists, including Gary Deirmendjian (Gary Deirmendjian), Lee Hun Chung (Hun Chung Lee 이헌정) and Suh Yongsun (SuhYongsun S Tudio). Each artist explores the ways in which reconsidering and enhancing the command of materiality can enrich the delivery of their own artistic vision.

Hendrik Kolenberg’s solo exhibition ‘Shaped by Light’ closes this Saturday, August 22.

An abstractionist on foot, or a “shape man” by his own telling, Kolenberg finds his subjects over the course of repeated walks through a city’s centre, its outskirts and suburbs. There he seeks those forms, born of the interplay of light and urban objects, which are capable of staying. This exhibition takes us through the streets of Rotterdam, the city of his birth, and Sydney, where he lives; these two cities are closest to him, yet are here seen through an eye ever drawn to those places left to the edge of gaze.

We’re delighted to share that Sassy Park’s ‘Gentleman Jack’ has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize.

Jack Crawford’s 1933 season made him the first player to win the Australian, French and Wimbledon singles titles in a single year — narrowly missing a complete Grand Slam with a loss at Forest Hills. Known as “Gentleman Jack” for his sportsmanship and immaculate whites, he competed in an era when elite players were still amateurs, funding their own careers. Park explores how celebrated figures are remembered as much for their vulnerabilities as their triumphs.

Sassy will make her debut at Sydney Contemporary next month where her works will feature in our themed presentation, ‘Lament’.

Gallery LNL is delighted to announce that Gary Deirmendjian (Gary Deirmendjian) will be joining the gallery’s cohort of represented artists.

Deirmendjian is a Sydney-based artist widely recognised for his public interventions: site specific installations which turn materials as disparate as shipping containers and moving image into socially conscious and thought-provoking propositions. Existing temporarily, these works seek no justification, mediation or expectation, serving instead as a cause to pause; enticing the passer-by into silent dialogue.

Deirmendjian’s practice spans seamlessly across sculpture, installation, intervention, photography and video – occasioned equally within public and gallery spaces. For Deirmendjian it is a matter of giving “form to felt thought”. This sees him working material and situation for their conceptual charge, and so bringing the breadth of his output into a unity of intent.

Deirmendjian’s debut with the gallery will take the form of simultaneous presentations at Sydney Contemporary and Frieze Seoul.

Jan Downes’ solo exhibition ‘Staring into the Sun’ is on view through 22 August.

Downes’ works result from a novel process of ceramic making, with Downes pouring porcelain into stitched cloth vessels suspended in space. Within the kiln the cloth burns away, leaving only the porcelain body underneath. The resulting works bear the outline of cloth: billowing out from their centres, as sheet folds crease and twist up their exteriors, to quietly bunch and hold at the base, never quite settling from their suspension, tip-toe. Produced as they are from this contact with flame, porcelain and fabric, Downes’ work serves as a meditation on afterimage: the trace left behind from our contact with the world.

We are delighted to share that Toni Warburton (Toni Warburton) will present ‘Encounter’, an exhibition at the Sydney College of the Arts Gallery, curated by Jan Guy.

‘Encounter’ brings together selected works from five decades of Warburton’s practice, “tracing an expansive trajectory through ceramics, assemblage, installation, notebooks and maquettes”. At its core, the exhibition explores “the act of encounter: a meeting with materials, objects, places, cultures and people driven by memory and lived experience”. 

The exhibition opens next Wednesday 05 August, 6–8pm alongside Mitsuo Shoji’s (Mitsuo Shoji) ‘Elemental Transcendence’.

We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Patsy Hely’s (Patsy Hely) ‘Was that a W***y Wagtail?; W***y Wagtail whistle (homage to Henry Grace)’ by the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Art Gallery NSW).

Rendered in porcelain and painted with soft-hued ceramic pigments, the work is characteristic of Hely’s gentle observational style, attending to the trees, birds and people who populate everyday life in Canberra and on her travels.
