Honestly, nobody was making alternative rock ballads like this in 1999.
When Shihad dropped Pacifier as the lead single for The General Electric, it hit a completely different frequency. It wasn’t a fast, aggressive heavy rock track… rather a slow-burning, melodic powerhouse.
The track builds on a spacey, hypnotic guitar line before exploding into Jon Toogood’s soaring, emotional chorus. Recorded in LA with producer Bryan Carlstrom, they managed to capture that perfect balance between heavy wall-of-sound production and genuine dynamic beauty.
It ended up driving The General Electric to triple-platinum status and became one of the most stunning alternative rock tracks of the late 90s.
Unlocking this memory first thing in the morning is the absolute best way to start the day.
