Nostalgia by Julie Nicholson
Last day to view the show at CBD Gallery

Julie Nicholson
CBD GALLERY

Nicholson’s practice draws on personal narratives, capturing shifting impressions of landscape, light, and colour. Working with layered oil stick, drawing and painting, she allows unexpected memories and scenes to surface through the process.

In this show, Julie Nicholson has titled many of the works using Old English words for landscape elements, such as weald, meaning forest. This reflects her interest in etymology and the evolution of language over time. Just as words shift, fall out of use, and take on new meanings, her understanding of the Australian landscape has also changed. Language, like memory, holds a connection to the past while continually adapting to the present, mirroring her experience of navigating place, identity, and belonging.

Last week to view Inner Grounds - Solo Show by Talya Brookman at CBD Gallery Sydney.

A special thank you to Sebastian Goldspink for hosting the artist talk!

The paintings of Talya Brookman exist somewhere between landscape and memory. Raised between London, Los Angeles, and Sydney, she approaches abstraction as a way of mapping internal experiences. Working with oil and ink, Brookman builds layered surfaces where forms emerge, dissolve and reappear, suspended between recognition and ambiguity.

Talya’s paintings are psychological spaces, safe corners in our hearts where freedom lives. Dense passages of colour sit beside openness, creating works that feel immersive and unsettled, almost as if the landscape itself is breathing. They invite us to slow down and enter an emotional space where memory, emotion, rhythm and nature dissolve into one another.

Julie’s practice is deeply rooted in memory, belonging, and homesickness.

She moved from the UK to Australia and the experience of longing for home has quietly shaped much of her life and artistic practice. Through Julie s work she questioned Is nostalgia a thought nourishes us? Or something that prevents us from moving forward?

Many of Julie’s paintings are divided into fragmented panels, reflecting the emotional experience of searching for familiarity within an unfamiliar landscape.

While painting in the residency of The Corridor Project at southern highland she sometimes encountered moments where the landscape briefly felt “like home”, but then Australian elements like eucalyptus leaves or palm trees would suddenly interrupt that feeling, reminding her again of distance. We can feel the layers of movement from her canvas with colors, remove the colors by bleach, and paint again and sand the canvas, all of her dances left marks just as her journey of the life.

We are delighted to congratulate our represented artist Martin Claydon on his participation in The 22nd China International Cultural Industries Fair in Shenzhen as a guest artist from Australia and as the Finalist of the Australian China Art Residency Prize (ACAR)

Martin spoke about Australian art and culture at the Asia-Pacific Young Artists Exchange Salon, held on 21 May 2026 as part of the “Boundless Asian-Pacific Youth Art Exhibition”.

Thank you to TWT Property Group for founding ACAR and supporting both Australian and Chinese artists.

Special thank you to ACAR Advisory Committee Member Patrick Mayoh for this amazing opportunity. Your generous support means a world to our emerging artist.
