Bird flu has turned up again, and authorities want to know where every flock in the country is so they can move fast if it spreads. That would mean registering the half-dozen chooks out the back—same as you register the dog.

Supporters say register them—if it stops a disease tearing through and sending the price of eggs through the roof again, filling in one form is nothing at all.

Others say it's six chooks and a bantam, not a poultry farm—another form, another fee, and the ones who'd do the wrong thing won't register anyway.

⛽💸 SHOULD PETROL PRICES BE CAPPED?

Fuel's climbing again—and you can drive past two servos a kilometer apart with thirty cents a liter between them. For anyone out of the bush or still driving to work and to appointments, it's one of the biggest bills going.

Supporters say cap it—those price swings have nothing to do with the real cost of the fuel, and people on a pension or living in the country can't simply stop driving.

Others say cap it, and the servos in the quiet towns will shut their doors altogether—and no government here can control a world oil price anyway.

Plenty of us had a paper round at twelve and were stacking shelves at fifteen. Now it cuts both ways—some reckon kids today are wrapped in cotton wool and learn nothing about work; others say they're already drowning in school and screens.

Supporters say let them work a few hours a week—a first job teaches you about money, manners, and turning up on time better than any classroom ever will.

Others say childhood is short enough as it is, schoolwork has to come first, and a 14-year-old shouldn't be propping up a business on the lowest wage going.

You need a license to drive a car. But anyone can walk out of a shop with a puppy and not the faintest idea what they're doing—and then it's the dog, the neighbors, and the shelters that wear it.

Supporters say make it a short, cheap course before you take a dog home—it'd cut the attacks, the barking complaints, and the thousands of dogs dumped every year when it all gets too hard.

Advertised rents have hit a record—about **$675 a week** nationally and **$843 in Sydney**. Renting households are now handing over around **34% of their income before tax**, the highest level ever recorded. Meanwhile, a landlord can claim the interest, the rates, the repairs, and the depreciation.

Supporters say give renters something back—they're the ones getting hammered hardest, and it's a bit rich that the only person getting a tax break on a rental is the one who already owns it.

Others say a deduction would be swallowed up by higher rents inside a year, and the real fix is building more homes, not shuffling tax around.

You're home all day. You hear nothing at all. And there in the letterbox is a card saying, *"Sorry, we missed you"—now go and drive forty minutes to a depot and pick it up yourself.

Supporters say make them knock and actually wait—people have paid for delivery, plenty of older folks can't easily get to a depot, and it's a joke that it keeps happening.

Others say the drivers are flat out on impossible run times set by head office—it's the companies squeezing them that's the real problem, not the bloke in the van.

A network outage this week knocked out an **entire state government's systems—hospitals, police, the lot. No computers, no records, no bookings. It's not the first time, and it certainly won't be the last.

Supporters say keep a paper system running alongside it—hospitals and police can't just stop because a server fell over, and we've thrown away a backup that worked perfectly well for the sake of convenience.

Others say paper is slow, it gets lost, and nobody under 40 is trained on it anymore—spend the money on systems that don't fall over instead of going backwards.

The Medicare rebate for a standard GP visit is about **$42.85**. The average private fee is about **$94**. So you're left out of pocket around **$51—every single visit. And **fewer than half of GPs still bulk bill all their adult patients**, even with billions tipped into the incentives.

Supporters say if a practice is taking the taxpayer's bulk-billing bonus, then pensioners and health care card holders should never be charged a gap. Simple as that.

Others say a GP clinic is a small business with rent and staff to pay; the rebate still doesn't cover the real cost of a proper consult, and forcing them and plenty will simply stop taking the incentive altogether.

🐕🛍️ SHOULD DOGS BE ALLOWED INSIDE SHOPS?

The dogs-in-store argument has flared up again this week after shoppers at a big hardware chain found a **"revolting"** mess left in the aisles—only three months after a dog **attacked a young girl** inside a store and was later put down. Assistance dogs can go anywhere, always. Everyone else's dog depends entirely on who owns the shop.

Supporters say a hardware store isn't a hospital—a well-behaved dog on a short lead harms nobody; it's half the reason people wander in on a Saturday, and plenty of owners can't just leave them in a hot car.

Others say shops aren't a dog park—you've got little kids at eye level with a strange dog's teeth, people who are frightened or allergic, mess in the aisles for someone on minimum wage to clean up, and far too many owners who reckon their dog is better behaved than it is.
