Fragment 1

For many years, Oliver belonged to a porcelain doll with golden hair. He followed her faithfully from room to room and endured every small cruelty without complaint.

MIMSY

Mimsy had excellent manners, spoke very little, asked for almost nothing, and unquestioningly obeyed her elders.

One day, she caught and ate a very peculiar little mouse. After that, she was never quite the same.

Certain things cannot be undone.

A small group of strange creatures is looking for a new home.

Some came into the world only recently.

Others seem to have been waiting for a very long time.

AFFECTION

The cat was far too large for any respectable drawing room, and yet there he sat in the corner as though the house had been built around him. In a pocket much like that of a mother kangaroo, he carried a porcelain infant. The tiny passenger regarded the world with silent composure. An optimist might have mistaken the arrangement for affection, though the household preferred not to speculate.

And so the residents carried on together in a quiet understanding which nobody particularly approved of, yet no living soul would have dared disturb.
