Coastal Community Hub
The McTavish Surfboards store on Harbord Road opened in 2023 as a reflection of Brookvale’s deep roots in Australian surf culture and the return of founder Bob McTavish to the place where it all started for the Australian surfboard industry

The store showcases the full range McTavish surfboards and apparel, from shortboards to signature longboards as well as boardshorts, jackets, shirts and denim – all in one place

Given most of what happens here is conversation and connection about boards, waves and design, the McTavish store is essentially a community hub for people who love well-crafted things and coastal living

Check out our story in the latest Tawny Frogmouth about the arrival of this iconic Australian surf brand and the folk who run the store

Endangered Species Day Brookvale artist Jamiee Paul recently completed an artist residency with the Bob Brown Foundation

This artwork was born from her observations of the work conservationists are doing to help protect black cockatoos and their habitat

During her residency, Jaimee was shocked to learn that four out of Australia’s five black cockatoo species are now classified as either vulnerable or threatened

These majestic birds with their loud and distinctive mournful call need old-growth trees with hollows large enough for nesting. These trees, that take over a hundred years to grow, are being cleared from our native forests at an alarming rate

Check out to purchase one of her limited edition pieces - 10% of sales will be donated to Black Cockatoo Recovery

My Life With Her opening this Thursday at Curl Curl Creative Space - is a solo exhibition by Venezuelan-born, Brookvale-based photographic artist Gabby Villalba

Developed over more than a decade, what started as a way of documenting her everyday life gradually evolved into ‘a long-form visual journal that traces emotional transitions, cycles of change and the shifting nature of relationships over time’

Working between documentary portraiture and self-portrait photography, Gabby engages camera-less and digital processes alongside 19th century sun-printed cyanotypes. She expands the work using collage and up-cycled materials, allowing each image to develop through its own pace and process

The exhibition features handmade prints, textile elements and an animated short film created in collaboration with her partner Miguel Gonzalez. The exhibition experience offers ‘an intimate environment that invites viewers to consider continuity, connection and the ways we move through change’

Exhibition Details
Opening Night: 14 May 2026 / 5:30–8:00pm
Curl Curl Creative Space: 105 Abbott Rd, North Curl Curl NSW
Gallery Hours: 11:00am–4:00pm daily and by appointment
Closing: Saturday 23 May, 4:00pm
