Backstory of “Full Moon Gathering by the Waterhole”
** I will post more of the characters within this artwork over the next few weeks***
This painting took me on an unexpected journey—straight back to my childhood love of imagination and fantasy.
As a little girl, I often escaped into the bushland behind some of the houses we lived in. The bush became my sanctuary, where I would invent creatures only I could see. Amidst the upheavals of moving homes, broken family, and being left in places that didn’t always feel safe, the bush offered me comfort. It was a world where magic was real, and I was never alone.
Creating this piece brought many of those memories flooding back—not heavy, but healing. That’s the quiet magic of art: it reveals truths we didn’t know we were holding and shows us why certain images feel so deeply familiar.
And then something wonderful happened… little characters began to appear. At first just one or two, then more tumbling in from the edges like old friends. Each with a presence, a personality, and some with a story of their own. This experience found me unexpectedly, like a homecoming to my imagination like when my imaginary friends had names.
Here, I don’t need permission. I don’t feel fear. I simply follow the flow, and the story finds me.
