Three birds. Three very different personalities. 🪶✨
From the striking elegance of the Secretary Bird to the tiny, nectar-loving Eastern Spinebill and the wonderfully quirky Tawny Frogmouth, I loved bringing each of these birds to life with needle and thread.

One of my favourite things about embroidery is slowing down and noticing all the little details that make each bird so unique.

The pigeon is finally complete! This close-up gives a glimpse of some of the detail before the final reveal.

Right now, I’m in the last stage of the process - rinsing away the water-soluble marker outlines. Once that’s done, it’ll be ready to share in full!

Fun fact: Pigeons played a vital role as messengers during World War I and World War II. These remarkable birds successfully delivered critical messages across dangerous conditions, helping save thousands of lives through their reliable service.

Not every “owl” you spot in Australia is actually an owl. 👀

The Tawny Frogmouth is one of Australia’s most fascinating birds, famous for its incredible camouflage. By day, it sits perfectly still with its eyes closed, blending into tree branches so well that it’s almost impossible to spot.

Another progress update on my pigeon 🐦✨
I’ve been working on the light grey body and wing sections this week. It’s quite a large area to fill, but the finish line is finally starting to come into view! Lots of beads and sequins adding texture, sparkle and depth to the feathers.

Did you know pigeons are rather fast fliers! They can fly at speeds of around 80–97 km/h and can even reach 145 km/h. Their streamlined bodies, powerful flight muscles and efficient wing design make them impressive flyers.

Pigeon progress update 🪡
The green and purple neck sections are finally coming together and I’m happy with how it’s looking already.
It was such a nice day outside, so I attempted to channel “pigeon sitting in a tree” look. 🤭🌿

I learnt something pretty crazy about pigeons while researching fun facts. Pigeons make milk! It’s quite rare among birds. There are only three birds that produce milk - pigeons, flamingos and male emperor penguins.
