Artsplaining Negative Space.

It’s not empty- it has a very clear purpose. The space around a subject (in a painting, or on your wall) gives it room to be seen.

It’s no secret that I love portraits (just look how strongly they feature within the curation). They add character, depth and interest to a space. If you forced me to choose, these are my top 3.

Obviously I love them all (as I personally select every piece that Bison Art has), but if you forced me to choose my top 3 drawings these three would be it!

Zelia Ranger’s Big Little Island is about recognising your past so you understand who and what has shaped you, while also moving forward. The story carries through both the central figure and the landscape drawn on the matting board.

After reading Francoise Gilot’s Life with Picasso, the idea of a ‘flower woman’ resonated with French born Marie Hiot. The work represents the way women have changed over the last century, growing, developing and blooming, assuming themselves complete with all their petals and colours.

And lastly Here and South Downs, also by Zelia Ranger’s, is from her Near and Far series which deals with the theme of love, loss, distance and connection. Using mixed media and playing with scale, the figures and landscapes are slightly displaced, overlapping and touching on separate planes.

Looking at her work, there’s no doubt that flowers are Brigitte Amiel-Northover’s muse. In conversation with Brigitte Amiel-Northover, we get to know the artist behind the work.

Today we look into the story behind Salleigh Olsen’s Resurgence series.

Created while living amongst the Blackbutt trees of Pearl Beach, the collection reflects the artist’s deep connection to their scale, resilience and role within the Australian landscape.

Each work is painted onto recycled blackbutt timber, allowing the material itself to become part of the artwork. The grain, texture and imperfections remain visible, celebrating the natural beauty and history of the tree in its whole form.

Balancing restraint with expression, the series is a reminder that even with everything humans create, nature continues to hold an undeniable presence.

I see a lot of AI generated mock ups and apps to showcase artwork, and whilst they’re great to help imagine how an artwork is going to look in your home, they can be misleading.

Here is a guide for how to spot them, and what to do or ask the gallery (or artist) before you buy.
