NOW OPEN | SABINE MARCELIS - AXIS
Axis is a new solo exhibition by Sabine Marcelis, one of the most significant artist-designers working today. Rotterdam-based, Marcelis’s work is held in permanent collections including MoMA New York, Stedelijk Museum, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, National Gallery of Victoria, and Art Gallery of South Australia.
This exhibition brings together, for the first time, two distinct bodies of work: new cast resin pieces made in Marcelis’s Rotterdam studio, and lacquered works created in collaboration with Kawatsura Shikki artisans in Akita, Japan. The two are conceived in dialogue, the resin works shaped by and in direct response to the lacquer.
The title Axis refers to the line around which something revolves. Across the works in this exhibition, that line is literal, a single gesture that becomes the organising principle of each piece, and the point at which materiality and form shape our perception of an object.
