Can be learned by anyone;

Does not have to be only for those who want to be professional artists. Does not require 'innate talent'. The skills developed in learning to see and perceive are transferrable to all forms of self expression, innovation and invention. Metaphor, world mythology, meaning and imagination nurture the artistic mind. Learning to draw can and must be FUN. We aim to shine a strong spotlight on drawing skills in particular and creativity in general because the skills you learn and the neuro-plastic pathways you build in learning to perceive/see are powerfully transferable to all creative pursuits and an antidote to the overpoweringly left brained society we live in. Learning to draw hands is crucial for portrait painters as they are the second most expressive part of the human body after the face. Aristotle believed they revealed the soul.

At LIGHTHOUSE ART SPACE we have a Saturday afternoon drawing club for past participants that will be free until December 31 2021. We learn how to draw - online, together. And we practice, a lot, from photographs. We listen to carefully curated playlists.

So far we have learned about and practiced gesture drawing for one month and hands for 5 weeks.

The progress in participant drawing ability has been spectacular.

Yesterday we copied from hand drawings of the masters.

In November we will be studying how to draw feet and from December to end January we will be studying portraiture.

In India, the god Shiva is known as ‘the Destroyer’. In Sanskrit (the original Indo-European language of India), the word ‘nata’ means ‘drama, act or theatre’. One of the aspects of the god Shiva is that of Lord of the Dance - Nataraj. The two most common forms of Shiva’s dance are a gentle dance associated with the Creation of the World, and an energetic dance representing the Dance of Bliss. In this dance, Shiva’s vigorous movement is said to destroy weariness - weary perspectives, actions and lifestyles. In essence, these two dances are said to represent the two main aspects of Shiva’s nature, for in order to create, inspire or motivate, it is necessary to remove, release or destroy those views, attitudes or ideas that are holding you back. This is what we celebrate on Sunday.

This event consists of 3 hours of short to long poses hosted via Zoom comprising standing, sitting and reclining poses with at least one portrait.
