Bombay Talkies play is set in a traditional Irani Café called “Bombay Talkies” in Mumbai. “Bombay Talkies” restaurant’s traditional “family” ambiance along with its owner and workers warmth and ability to listen, provides a safe place for its regular customers, a wide variety of “Mumbaikars”, to narrate a smorgasbord of personal stories in a very raw form.
What begins as a casual conversation slowly peels back layers of a city — its humor, its prejudices, its aspirations, its carefully tucked-away truths. The kind we’ve all heard. The kind we’ve all politely ignored. Some very hard-hitting factual exposures which at various times we all might have heard or experienced but have put it under the proverbial “Carpet” as we are too afraid of how others might judge us through their “social correctness” lenses.
It’s sharp. It’s layered. It’s uncomfortably familiar.
