Akala Newman is a rising dark angel of pop music, known for her edgy, unapologetic songwriting and angelic vocal tone that merges haunting beauty with raw power. A proud Wiradjuri/Gadigal woman, Akala’s music channels a unique blend of fantasy, magic, and fierce personal storytelling. Described by The Urban List as a “bonafide triple threat we really can’t get enough of,” her presence on the stage feels ethereal yet rebellious, captivating audiences with a bold, otherworldly energy. Akala’s musical career is decorated with milestones.
She penned and performed “Calling Country,” the opening anthem for Sydney’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks at the Opera House. She won the inaugural IndigiTube Song Contest, graced the stage at the
National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin, and opened the Women’s World Cup draw in Aotearoa with Gawura Dance Company. Her unique fusion of pop melodies and First Nations storytelling has carved out space for her as a fresh and daring voice in the Australian music scene. Behind the scenes, Akala continues
to break barriers. Her artistic vision expands through her work as a First Nations Consultant at Arts and Cultural Exchange (ACE), First Nations Lecturer and Academic Officer at the National Art School and Artist Educator at The Museum of Contemporary Arts as well as her business development of Gili Gatherings,
which celebrates First Peoples’ voices. With residencies at Koori Radio and The Red Rattler in 2023, Akala is
constantly evolving, driven by a commitment to community and creative expression.
