Also coming up on Monday (tomorrow!), we have an interstate collaboration led by local guitar legend HARLEY COLEMAN!

Harley Coleman- Guitar
Oscar Bruten (MEL)- Saxophone
Sabine Tapia- Double Bass
Abby Constable - Drumset

Guitarist Harley Coleman and Saxophonist Oscar Bruten (MEL) recently travelled- accidentally, simultaneously - to Los Angeles, USA. After 10 days in the City of Angels, a mutual conclusion was reached: they should perform some good music together publicly, and soon.

Tonight, they join forces with the formidable Sabine Tapia on Bass and the incomparable Abby Constable on Drumset. Playing a smattering of tunes by Coleman, Bruten, and others, the four bring what they know and love about jazz music made in Australia, shaped by where they’re from - and where they’re headed.

Coming up next Monday, we’ve got a huge double bill of creative music including a set of solo drum music from Melbourne-based JAMES MCLEAN!

James McLean is one of Australia’s most distinctive improvising drummers, recognised with the 2016 Freedman Fellowship for Jazz and known for his work with ensembles including Spirograph Studies, Andrea Keller’s Five Below, The Eugene Ball 4tet, and Sam Gill’s Coursed Waters. Over the past decade James has pursued a solo practice underpinned by his PhD research in embodied music cognition: a deep inquiry into the relationship between movement and sound that shapes everything he does on stage. His solo discography includes three albums for solo drums – Counter Clockwork (2015), Oscillator (2018), and Interstitial (2021).

For this rare Sydney performance, James will be performing new material currently in development ahead of recording in late 2026.

Coming up next Monday, a great double bill of improvised music including an exciting new Australian/Swedish trio featuring Alister Spence, a creative mainstay of the Australian jazz scene, Sam Gill, the 2025 Freedman Jazz Fellowship winner, and Peter Nilsson, a drumming powerhouse recently relocated to Sydney from Sweden.

Sam Gill - saxophones
Alister Spence - piano, percussion and preparations
Peter Nilsson (SWE) - drums

The trio of Gill, Spence & Nilsson come together for their second public performance, building on a shared language they’ve been developing in duo and trio formations since Peter’s move to Sydney in 2025. They play improvised music that moves between moments of lyricism, textural exploration and rhythmic density.

Also coming up this Monday, a rare solo performance by Sydney staple, bassist MAX ALDUCA!

Max Alduca - double bass

Usually heard playing in a verity of ensembles Max Alduca will present a set of music unaccompanied on the double bass. This set will explore his love of the bass’s resonance and its ability to effortlessly explore melodies and textures. As bassist of the Necks Lloyd Swanton says “…and hear this: there are few bass players in Australia playing the instrument with the imagination, command and joy with which Max does. A solo set from Max Alduca is sure to be utterly compelling”.

Also playing this Monday are the one-of-a-kind duo CLOCKS AND CLOUDS!

Clocks and Clouds are a unique ensemble based in Wollongong comprising core players and composers Kraig Grady and Terumi Narushima.

Each of them individual paragons of microtonal music practices, their totally acoustic performances feature specially retuned vibraphone and pump organ, or Mesotonal (‘between tones’) Marimba and thundering bass Meru Bars which engage with the acoustics of a space to create unique resonances and pulses.

Between them, their work has been presented at festivals and galleries around the world, and they have accrued a devoted following among the new music cognoscenti.

Coming up next Monday, we’ve got a very exciting double bill including a SOLO ALBUM LAUNCH by a local legend of the piano, ALISTER SPENCE!

Alister is a Sydney-based pianist and composer who’s been an integral part of the Australian jazz and improvisation scene for more than 35 years in bands such as Clarion Fracture Zone, Wanderlust, The Australian Art Orchestra, Alister Spence Trio, Asteroid Ekosystem, Sensaround, and many other projects. He tours and records regularly with well-known improvisers including Satoko Fujii (Japan), Tony Buck (DE/Australia), Raymond MacDonald (Scotland), Ed Kuepper (Australia).

Always Ever is Spence’s second solo piano album following the release of Whirlpool in 2020 (listed in ‘Best of 2020, New York City Jazz Review’). Always Ever is released on April 24. Early reviews are strongly positive such as:

‘Indispensable! Because if art has any enduring function, it is not simply to move us. It is to unsettle us, just enough to make us listen again’ (Thierry De Clemensat, Paris Move).
