Ever wondered why a painting can have all the right colours — but still look a little… flat?

It often comes down to tone and value.

That’s why Raylene is starting Term 4 Oil Painting with grisaille — working entirely in shades of grey before colour enters the picture.

Without colour to distract us, we can really focus on light, shadow, form and getting those values right. Then, when colour is introduced, the painting already has a solid foundation to build on.

It’s a great way to start working with oils — whether you’re new to painting or wanting to strengthen the skills you already have.

Art Explorers is our weekly creative class for ages 5–12, where the projects change, the materials change and there’s plenty of room for kids to put their own spin on things.

Painting, drawing, collage, construction, mixed media, experimenting with materials… basically, we don’t make them pick just one favourite.

And no, they don’t all have to make the same thing.

What the hell is a blending brush actually for? 🎨

These 118B Blending Brushes are designed for creating soft, smooth transitions in your paint — blending colours together, softening edges and building those lovely gradual changes between light and dark.

They’re particularly useful for oils and acrylics, where you want to manipulate the paint without leaving obvious brush marks.

The pointed shape gives you a bit more control than a big flat blending brush, so you can work into smaller areas while still getting that lovely soft finish.

I’ve brought them in in sizes 6 & 10 — because sometimes you want to blend a tiny bit… and sometimes you mean BUSINESS. 😂

Jo was our 2026 Gallery Award winner, and this Sunday she’s back at The Dandy Lion Studio to teach her very own Map-Inspired Landscapes workshop.

Inspired by topographical maps, winding rivers and aerial landscapes, you’ll work with Posca paint markers to build layers of colour, pattern and detail — creating your own colourful landscape artwork along the way.

Sunday 4 October | 10am–2pm

Suitable for beginners and experienced creatives.

A practical, hands-on 2-hour workshop with Kim exploring how campaigns actually come together.

You’ll look at real campaign examples, develop your own campaign concept, work out the visual look, feel and messaging, and create campaign assets along the way.

I want you to meet Iree. 🤎

Iree is one of the people bringing something really special to COLLIDE this year.

She’s a proud First Nations woman with Wamba Wemba and Wadi Wadi connections, and her work is deeply rooted in culture, community and Country.

I love that what Iree shares isn’t just about learning a dance. It’s about stories, connection, movement and culture — and making space for people to experience that together.

This Sunday, we get to spend some time with her.

I’m really looking forward to it.

Six years of The Dandy Lion 🦁

Six years ago, The Dandy Lion Studio found its home.

It looked very different then.

The space has changed. A lot.
The furniture has moved, the rooms have evolved, the things we make and do here have grown — and somewhere along the way, The Dandy Lion Studio became something much bigger than the space it started in.

Six years of classes.
Workshops. Exhibitions. Kids making glorious messes. Adults rediscovering creativity. New ideas, new teachers, new people walking through the door.

Six years of building a creative life in a town where, occasionally, people still ask the very reasonable question:

“But… can you actually make a living from art?”

Apparently, we’re still finding out. 😉

And maybe that’s one of the things I’m proudest of.

Not just having a creative business — but building a life around creativity, and continuing to believe there is value in making, teaching, sharing and creating a place for other people to do the same.

Six years in.

Happy birthday, Dandy Lion. 🧡
