LitterARTy – Week 3
Hikari is coming together!
His frame has been created almost entirely from cardboard boxes left out the front of my local fruit and veggie shop — cut, bent, taped and wrestled into the beginnings of one very large-mouthed anglerfish. He’s now being covered in recycled denim, attached with zip ties, with the students’ cyanotypes soon to be added to his skin.
And this week the kids finally got to see their shadow artworks! After the last session, I’d taken their creations home, transferred them onto fabric and let the sun do its work. There was so much excitement finding their own pieces and seeing how their designs had transformed.
Then it was time to tackle what’s going INSIDE Hikari’s enormous jaw.
Before they arrived, I laid out foam, deflated balloons and discarded plastics with a simple challenge: create the kinds of sea creatures that could become Hikari’s rubbish-tasting “food.”
And they absolutely got amongst it.
Fish quickly turned into stingrays, turtles, jellyfish and all sorts of weird and wonderful maritime critters. As each one was finished, it was added to a long wire ready to eventually fill Hikari’s mouth.
And, of course, we counted them.
165 sea creatures. In one lunchtime session. 🤯
165 individual little ideas made from materials that otherwise might have been thrown away.
The volume. The creativity. The excitement. The chaos.
What a session!
Next up… Hikari needs some teeth. And judging by the size of that mouth, he’s going to need A LOT of them.
